BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Colombia's first woman defense minister, who launched all-out war on leftist rebels but openly feuded with the military brass, abruptly stepped down.
President Alvaro Uribe immediately accepted Defense Minister Martha Lucia Ramirez's resignation Sunday and
appointed a U.S.-educated businessman with no military experience to replace her.
Ramirez became the second Cabinet member to quit Uribe's government in a week. Her resignation was announced by Uribe's office, which gave no explanation for the surprise move.
Her successor, Jorge Alberto Uribe said he would press on with efforts to crush a four-decade leftist insurgency but was also open to peace talks. (snip/...)
