Bush 'freedom' medal for Lord Robertson

Lord Robertson, the General Secretary of Nato, will receive America's highest civilian honour this week when President Bush presents him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The former Defence Secretary will join a list of distinguished previous recipients including Nelson Mandela and Vaclav Havel, the former Czech president.

Lord Robertson, who stands down next month after four years in the post, will receive the honour at the White House on Wednesday.

Nicholas Burns, US ambassador to Nato, said yesterday that his country's highest decoration was rarely bestowed on foreigners. He said: "In this case it's being given to Lord Robertson for his brilliant and very decisive leadership of Nato and for his great friendship with the United States."

2. Would a fully conscious person put him on the same level with Mandela?
Right-wingers would, of course.

its own fabled gong - the OBN: yep, it's the Order of the Brown Nose. Spooky, eh?

5. The only medal Fat Bob deserves is for services to the comb-over
He's the human embodiment of the Peter Principle, a Scottish Town Councillor in charge of NATO.

6. It's not exactly the worst comb over ever
Top UK awards for the comb over must surely go to Arthur Scargill & Andrew "brillo pad" Neil, former Sunday Times editor.

On the other hand, if it's potato head jokes you want then Robertson is as good a starting point as any.

Mind you, he was defence secretary before he took over NATO so it''s not like he's that unqualified for the post. The problem here being that his replacement was of course Geoff (buf)Hoon, although unfortunatly I'm fairly sure that Robertson would have told exactly the same porkies under the circumstances.

7. Y'know I'd forgotten about Andrew Neil and his 'natural' barnet.
For me, George Robertson is the poster boy for all those Scottish Labour MP's from the old boy network who were given good jobs as rewards for party services. That's how I see him. Labour is pretty top-heavy with West-of-Scotland MP's, isn't it. Even Blair claims to be Scottish, for some reason.

8. Blair has some Scottish blood

But actually he is somebody from a well to do family in the North-East of England, representing a North-East seat, who if truth be told has more than a hint of public schoolboy about him and who has made his name down south.
