PRC closes 100s temples 10 churches, group claims
Authorities in China's eastern province of Zhejiang intent on curbing illegal religious activities have closed down hundreds of temples and 10 churches, a Hong Kong-based human rights group said yesterday.

The closure of 392 temples and the churches was part of a campaign against "key members of illegal religious groups" waged by Zhejiang's Deqing county, the Information center for Human Rights and Democracy said in a statement.

No comment was immediately available from the authorities who were not working yesterday.

4. Hey, if we can do it to mosques...why can't they do it to churches?
they believe that the churches are spawning anti-government sentiments just like we do.

6. There may be more to this than repression of religion
In countries where political organizations outside the government are forbidden, opposition often manifests through religious groups.

China, in particular, has a long history of the fall of dynasties being prompted by uprisings of popular religious/occult movements. (That's why they're cracking down so hard on the Falun Gong.)

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that these "illegal religious groups" include many with a strong streak of political dissent mixed into their teachings.

For all its economic prosperity, China is currently in a very nervous and unsettled state, but the internal tensions are still being kept very much behind the scenes.
