Bells Yet to Jingle for Holiday Job Seekers

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Staffing companies warn that temporary job seekers are unlikely to experience much joy this holiday season.

Despite recent indications of a growing economy and an improved jobs picture, both Adecco and Manpower Inc. , the Nos. 1 and 2 staffing companies in the world, say demand for temporary labor this holiday season is about the same as last year -- poor.

"You sit there tapping your fingernails saying, 'There's got to be jobs sooner or later, right?"' said Banc of America securities analyst Marta Nichols. "But we now have a pervasive culture of cost cutting and cost control in corporate America and companies are consistently trying to do more with less."

Among the leading users of temporary workers during the holidays, call centers, warehousing companies, makers of baked goods and beverages, and auto financing firms are most likely to hire staffing companies. <snip>

While recent government data showed that demand for temporary labor has increased year-to-year for the past four months, staffing companies say the uptick in revenue they saw last quarter (4%) is still nowhere near the spurt in demand witnessed after downturns in the 1980s or 1990s. <snip>

COMMENT: the 11 member nations in the G10 group: Belgium, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States, have released a comment that a worldwide recovery appears to be starting. with Asia doing well, and an expectation that 12 months from now it will be noticeable world wide - I wonder how much that G10 comment cost Bush and friends to obtain!

Imagine what the teacher who recommended that * read 1984 is thinking now. Damnit George, I said it was a great BOOK, not a great IDEA!
