Clark: Bush Ruining US
Clark: Bush ruining U.S.
On a brief campaign stop, Democratic candidate takes aim at the president.

Speaking to a crowd of about 100 people at the University Plaza Hotel, Clark called Bush's foreign and domestic policies "reckless" and "radical," while pledging to repeal portions of the USA Patriot Act, repair the United States' image among its allies and launch an aggressive jobs program should he capture the White House next year.

"It's only taken three years, and George W. Bush has made a mess of this country," Clark said.

Scoffing at recent reports that the economy was beginning to create jobs, the general said employment opportunities still weren't being added fast enough to absorb new entrants into the work force.

"Recovery is not about statistics, it's about people," Clark said. "This is a president who likes to take credit, but he doesn't like to take responsibility."

1. great line
"Recovery is not about statistics, it's about people," Clark said. "This is a president who likes to take credit, but he doesn't like to take responsibility."

Well, two great lines. The last one is the best, I've been saying the same thing throughout this "recovery."

2. More good lines:

Responding to a sign that read "Welcome to John Ashcroft's hometown," Clark took a shot at the attorney general, saying "he's not much of an attorney" and "he's sure not a general."

6. It sure is A**croft's hometown.
Mine too. It is largely Republican and AG and extremely conservative...except for my Mom. She is one of the least conservative, most angry at A**croft and the rest of the mis-administration of anyone in that town. Springfield's attitude is the main reason I don't ever want to live there again.

9. I know what you mean
I'm from SW MO myself. Nice countryside, but the attitudes can drive a progressive-minded person crazy.

5. Bush and Policy Wonk Rufus T. Firefly
When I see, read, or hear Republican claims as to how they're making things better, I keep remembering Groucho Marx's character Rufus T. Firefly from the movie Duck Soup and Groucho/Firefly's famous line that "If you think this country's bad off now / just wait 'till I get through with it!"

7. Hmmmm! 100 ?
I saw the pictures and it sure looked like more than 100.

Responsibility_can you imagine having a president with a brain? Or how about a soul?

Has anyone else read "The 2% Solution"? I picked it up because Clark mentioned the book, and I wanted to see if Miller would influence Clark's position. So far, it is hard to tell, but knowing that he knows what's in that book is a plus. I think everyone would get a dose of responsibilty under President Clark.

BTW, I recommend the book if you want to understand why this country is so horribly broken.

11. Gladly!
"The 2% Solution" by Matthew Miller (aide in Clinton WH)

a warning...the book contains plenty for both sides to love and hate. Nevertheless, Krugman loved it.

---snip---

The upshot of the forces we've discussed--electoral parity, Democratic timidity, Republican indifference, media stenography, and the warping effect of campaign cash--is a debased political culture in which potential answers to our major demestic problems cannot find expression. Even if some factors shaping our leaders' calculations seem understandable in isolation, when you add them up we're left trapped in an elaborate charade. Since our leader can't or won't talk about what it would take to make serious progress on health or schools or wages or campaign reform, they pretend they're serious as a way of communicating their good intentions and letting us know which "side" they're on.
