VFW Outraged at Inadequate Funding for Veterans Health Care

Thu Jul 17,12:53 PM ET

Contact: Bill Smith of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 202-543-2239

WASHINGTON, July 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Officials of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. today expressed dismay at yesterday's approval of the VA-HUD Independent Agencies Subcommittee appropriations bill claiming the measure will seriously jeopardize veterans' health care.

The VA-HUD Subcommittee bill, which funds the Department of Veterans Affairs (news - web sites) and other federal agencies, provides only a $1.4 billion increase over last year's funding level for veterans' health care. VFW officials point out that inflation alone will absorb that meager amount.

According to the VFW, the House and Senate passed budget resolution-the official congressional spending road map--provides a $3.4 billion increase as necessary for timely veterans health care. For the Congress not to appropriate this amount is a clear betrayal of the assurances made to America's veterans by the House Republican leadership.

1. That fees business is despicable.
And so is the increase in co-payments for drugs. They just increased them a few years ago and veterans were already suffering from that.
Another promise by Republicans broken. How low will they sink?

2. Thanks Chessie - I've been looking for documentation on the VA screw job..
BTW: any railroaders in your heritage? Besides the cat in "Alice in Wonderland", "Chessie" refers to another famous kitty:

Original Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad logo:

Stylized version:

11. Have you been to this sight?
www.ngwrc.org
Lot of good info there.
I am also a big railroad fan. collect G scale trains for the garden. My favorite is the Pennsylvania.
Also have huge ties to the Northwestern Railroad. My greatgrandmother sued them in the 1870's and established first fair land compensation in Illinois.

5. New day dawning, hadrons....
Vets have been going around the country for months now. They're organizing for 2004. They want Bush out. It will be the largest veterans protest vote in political history.

6. Hopefully, it will be DUB who's missing something next year...

As in, the VFW's endorsement! :eyes:

And, BTW, thanks a lot, RICHARDO, for solving the mystery (for me, at least!) of just what that "Chessie System" logo represented! At first, I thought it was some stylized outline of the full Chesapeake Bay, but it didn't conform to the Bay's boundaries. Now we know!:D

B-)

10. In all fairness, the VFW did endorse Wellstone last year
But, yeah, how many of these veterans voted for * because of the false perception that the Dems don't care about the military?

7. Can't afford it . . .
Lil George needs that Iraqi oil, and tax cuts for his overrich buddies, and open-ended no-bid contracts for Unca Dick's company, so there isn't any money for veterans. Besides, if those veterans were really Americans, they'd be over fighting in Iraq right now. And providing free security to Brown & Root. I mean, what have they done for America this century?

When Chimpy and his borrow-and-spend Republican friends run up a $600 billion deficit (and I'll bet a shiny nickel the final figure come September 30 will be a lot closer to that number than the $455 billion currently projected) for the year, things are going to get cut.

8. I wonder how many VFW stops Chimpy will make on the campaign trail..

So now he can't get a guaranteed sycophantic crowd from them anymore, what's left for him besides military bases?

For 34 years
the VFW has been sending me crap about joining their ranks. Because of their blind allegance to people like Nixon & Reagon, I have never answered any of their mail. If the VFW really does go against Chimpy, the organization might become much more attractive to many Vietnam veterans.

12. Has the American Legion spoken out on this?
My WW2 vet dad is a longtime Legionnaire and former lifelong Republican who now absolutely loathes *. Would like to email him something to hand out to his Legion buddies when he has breakfast with them next week.

14. But they aren't soldiers anymore
The Bush Regime only cares if they are soldiers and even then, leaving them over there in Iraq as long as he has isn't exactly strong support for our troops either
