U.S. Launches Operation in Northeast Afghanistan
I didn't see this posted anywhere...

U.S. soldiers have moved into northeastern Afghanistan to launch a new operation against Islamic militants in Nuristan and Kunar provinces, a military spokesman said on Monday.

Colonel Rodney Davis said "Operation Mountain Resolve" had begun on Friday with troops from the 10th Mountain Division being dropped from the air to clear the area for a larger deployment.

"The purpose of Operation Mountain Resolve is to destroy and disrupt anti-coalition forces and deny sanctuary to them," Davis told a briefing at Bagram Air Base just north of Kabul. He added that Afghan forces were also involved.

He did not specify the target of the latest operation by some 11,500 U.S.-led soldiers in Afghanistan.

7. Going into Nuristan is asking for trouble
Nuristan is the back of the back of beyond. It is the most remote, most mountainous, most inaccessible corner of a notoriously remote, mountainous, and inaccessible country.

The area was known as Kafiristan -- Land of the Pagans -- until 1895, when it was conquered by the Afghans and forcibly converted from animism. Yes, animism. That's how remote it is.

In addition, it's located at the edge of the Hindu Kush, and winter is coming on.

And we're dropping paratroopers in there . . . why?

8. I seem to recall out US troops doing rather poorly in that area
during the Afgan war. (What some are apprintly calling the "forgoten now".)

Sevral "moutain speculises" were sent in to take out Osama, but ended up getting frost bite as they didn't pack sleeping bags or heavy coats. They were also pleged by equipment failer, and got lost. They ended up retrating even before they had incounterd the enimey. The Taliban didn't even know they were there. Had they have known, its likly they may not have goten out alive, or so I was told.

But I have goten suspicus that this was an operation "designed to fail" as shortly after that, nearly all figting was handed over to the local militias. They would take the casulties, while the US Marines would seep in and take the credit (but it didn't prevent them from ingadging in sloater however.)
