Johannesburg - A manhunt is underway for the man who on Monday shot Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's close friend, socialite Hazel Crane, with police saying they were following strong leads.

The assailant, who hid behind a bin on the corner of 1st Street and Atholl Oaklands Drive before pouncing on Crane's car and firing six shots at it, was apparently seen escaping the scene by witnesses.

Crane was on her way to the Johannesburg High Court to testify in the jurisdiction hearing of Israeli diamond dealer and alleged mafia member Lior Saat, 33, accused of murdering Crane's estranged husband Shai Avissar.

Avissar, an alleged mafia godfather, was last seen alive at a fast-food outlet in Norwood. In January 2000 his battered body was found by police in a shallow grave on a smallholding in Erasmia, Pretoria.

Johannesburg socialite Hazel Crane, shot dead on Monday while on her way to the Johannesburg High Court to give testimony against an alleged South Africa-Israeli mafia member, apparently said only last week she feared for her life.

This was at the jurisdiction hearing of Lior Saat (33), a diamond dealer accused of battering to death Crane's estranged husband -- fellow diamond dealer and alleged mafia godfather Shai Avissar -- in Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

Avissar was last seen alive at a fast-food outlet in Norwood in October 1999. In January 2000 his battered, decomposing body was found by police in a shallow grave on a smallholding in Erasmia, Pretoria.

For a long while it has seemed to me that the accusations of anti-semitism are mostly attempts to shut down the discussion altogether.

I don't think any purpose is served by refusing to discuss an issue that has the potential to turn the ME into a conflagration. Well, on the other hand there is a purpose...to allow business as usual.

Not in anyone's best interest, IMO.
