Senate candidate's son booked for drugs

By BOB CHRISTIE
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

PHOENIX -- The son of a U.S. Senate candidate in Arizona was arrested and booked on drug charges, accused of selling narcotics to college students, officials said.

The 24-year-old son of former state Democratic Party chairman Jim Pederson was taken into custody Friday after a search of his home, deputies said.

James Robert Pederson was charged with possession of narcotics, marijuana and paraphernalia, and misconduct with weapons, among other charges, Lt. Paul Chagolla said. He was released on his own recognizance Saturday morning.

The elder Pederson, who is challenging Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, asked for the public to respect his family's privacy.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said politics weren't involved.

1. If they are going to attack Pedersen over this
why didn't they do the same to Jebbie Bush, whose daughter Noelle has been in and out of drug rehab a few times?

10. Either way, the qualifier should be that, if Repukes can demand...
...privacy when dealing with the transgressions of their children, then so can Democrats. Period.

3. KYL
It would be a HUGE blow to the repukes if Kyl were to be unseated. Expect dirty politics. Until this, Pederson has been gaining in popularity.

6. B-b-b-but Sheriff Arpaio says it's not political!
He's not at all political, unless you count the fact he introduced pink underwear for prisoners, and chain gangs, and old, green baloney for their dinners, and has delighted the right-wing with his ingenious moves to deprive prisoners of more and more ordinary well-being.

9. Pederson hasn't been doing that well. He just brought in a new local team
Edited on Sun Feb-19-06 02:42 PM by saracat
but the doofuses in the Party thought all he needed was "money" . He has tried so hard to please everyone he has ended up pleasing no one. The Dems don't think he is liberal enough and perceive him as Repuke lite and the R's won't vote for anyone without an R after their name. But the moderate R's and the independents are disgusted enough to vote for someone who gives them a choice. Pederson neede to show a clear difference between himelf and Kyle and hasn't sone it yet. And this was NOT the way to do it. LOL! ! Our fundies are going to go nuts with this. And it won't matter about the problems their kids had been in. Sorry to say, this is BAAAD for Jim. Again, what is the difference between him and Kyl, other than a letter? And Jim is a really great guy, but the consultants wouldn't let him be himself. They wanted reuke light and he has been struggling. He was going to turn a bit around and now this! I think he should take the kid and have him put away. He needs to use this both for the kid and himself. The kid NEEDS to be smacked. I am furious with the kid. He wasted Party time and money and now we will have to use resources that could help other candidates to try to fix this. I am so sorry for Jim amd the rest of his family.

8. He will continue to be unless the right-wing can pull off a political
assassination.

Did a quick google search, found this article from last August:
Democrat Pederson Surges Against Republican Kyl in Arizona US Senate Race
by Sun Tzu, Sun Aug 21, 2005 at 05:01:58 PM EST

From the diaries. With Brown out in Ohio where DeWine still is without a Democratic challenger, Dems have to broaden the net, Arizona is one place to do it. Jerome
A new poll in Arizona tracking the US Senate race between Republican incumbent Jon Kyl and expected Democratic opponent Jim Pederson shows voters in the state are beginning to surge toward the challenger even before he has formally declared his candidacy. The poll was conducted by Wright Consulting Services from July 21, 2005 to August 10, 2005 among a representative sample of 600 likely general election voters in the state and it has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percentage points at a 95% level of confidence. 12. better comparisons than noelle bush
Just a bit of advice: if you get into a discussion about this with some freeper who thinks this should be held against Pederson, don't use the Noelle Bush example. Too easy to distinguish her crimes (possession and trying to fill a false prescription) from possession with intent to distribute.

More importantly, there are so many better examples to give, as spelled out here (my favorite is Dan Burton):

18. I haven't heard that. Do you have a link?
Ordinarily, one wouldn't expect someone who had been guilty of a crime to run for the Senate. It hardly ever happens, actually. He would know the opposition would run him out of the state.

In other words, it would help if you included substance to back up your insinuation.

19. I'm sorry...
When I opened the link the first name I saw was Randall Todd Cunningham
busted for 400 lbs of marijuana. Then I remembered vaguely about his father Rep Cunningham resigning over the the bribary scandal... I Googled it and was correct Duke Cunningham took bribes and had to resign from Congress.

Thanks..

26. I just did my Com•Log•ic Blog on ole Duke Stir's Double Standard
Duke-Stir was a staunch supporter of the Death penalty for drug king pins, and mandatory sentencing. That is until his son got busted.

Now I'm not one to condemn a plant, i.e. marijuana. However, lil' Todd developed a liking to cocaine and tested for it three times before his court date, which got him 2 1/2 years in jail.

For more info on the subject on to my blog. It was my Sat. Feb 18, entry.

same televised sentence he says the Pederson arrest isn't political? Why mention Kyl then? Hmmm.

25. I don't know the answer to that
However, the only area of "discretion" that a sheriff or police department has is to arrest or not to arrest. They don't decide a punishment or a plea bargain.

If this kid was an ordinary kid, he would have been arrested too, whether the sheriff be Democrat or Republican.

27. I am not disputing the case but I am amazed you don't think it
inappropriate for the sheriff to use the arrest as an occasion to tout his support for the alleged dealer' father's opponent! If this were really nonpolitical and an ordinary 'arrest'. it seems the sheriff would have either said nothing about the Senate candidate, or handled this without benefit of press as they do "ordinary' cases!

23. They tried this in Arkansas already!
The Rethuglicans in Arkansas already tried this manuever and failed.

Kyle Beebe, the son of our AG, had apparently been charged with possession of an ounce of marijuana. The Rethuglican blogs doctored his arrest documents and claimed he had 10 lbs. and was a drug dealer. I smell a rat in this race.

In my race for Lt. Governor, they brought up bad checks I bounced in college, and made it out to be something it wasn't.

This Shiite wing of the Republican Party is determined to win at all costs!

BTW, only because I need to, here's a shameless self-promotion but VERY MUCH NEEDED :
