Feds: Miami used as illegal entry point for thousands of Chinese

The Associated Press

MIAMI --
A husband and wife were accused in federal court Monday of smuggling Chinese immigrants into the United States, charging up to $52,000 for each person.

Federal investigators said Alexandre Wei, 57, a Taiwanese national with French citizenship, and Bing Xei, 43, a Chinese citizen, had previously used New York as the entry point in the smuggling schemes, but later switched to Miami.

"This is a lot different from what we usually see here. It's usually go-fast boats running Cubans to the Keys," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Tamen after the couple and three co-defendants, arrested Sunday, made their initial appearance in Miami federal court Monday.

U.S. immigration agents in South Florida began investigating Chinese smuggling in 1999 after noticing a jump in Chinese citizens arriving at Miami International Airport on falsified visas. (snip/...)

Florida welcomes Cuban illegal immigrants with open arms, as long as they don't actually catch them in the open seas. Cubans are allowed to stay in the country, and are offered perks like instant work visa, green card, social security, Section 8 Housing assistance, food stamps, medical care, etc.

It's all allowed in the Cuban Adjustment Act. Odd, isn't it?

2. Actually, a majority of Cuban-Americans are Dems
Please don't allow the media to fool you into believing that the stark minority of intransigent rightwingnut "exiles" who scream the loudest represent the majority of Cuban-Americans.

Most of the Cuban-American community came to the US not because of some hatred of Castro or socialism, they come here for the same reasons that immigrants come here from all over the Caribbean and Latin Americas - more opportunity & jobs.

Keep in mind that the sanctions against Cuba, and the immigration perks offered to Cuban migrants have been pretty much bipartisan over the years.
