US Holds 20 Suspected al-Qaida in Iraq
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20031111/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_al_qaida&cid=540&ncid=716

<snip>
"Currently, we have about 20 who are suspected of being from al-Qaida," Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez told reporters. "We are still questioning them" and have not determined absolutely whether they are members of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s terrorist organization.

U.S. officials have said they suspect foreign volunteers, including some from al-Qaida, have slipped across the borders into Iraq (news - web sites) to take part in a "holy war" against the U.S.-led occupation.

However, a number of U.S. commanders have said they were uncertain about the numbers of foreign fighters and their role in the insurgency.

Asked about foreign fighters, Sanchez said "hundreds" of foreigners cross the border area to carry out attacks here. Sanchez was asked how close U.S. forces had been to capturing Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), Sanchez replied only: "Not close enough."

1. I heard quip from from Sanchez on NPR this morning,
he said that they were unable to establish that these guys were members of al-Qaida.

3. I guess the beatings will continue until they 'fess up...
...besides, they've got this big fresh hole in the ground out back they need to fill.

2. In the paper this morning ...
the results of some study was buried in the back of the paper indicating that the Al Queda structure had been largely eradicated, but there were now much more "shadowy Muslim extremists" difficult to track. How does that jive with these endless references to the threat of Al Queda?

4. On any given day, the US can pick up 20 Iraqis and say they are
suspected al-Qaeda. These are the same tactics that Israel uses against the Palestinian people. What do we expect? We are occupiers. If the Iraqi are not members of al-Qaeds they should be members of some other resistence group.
