George W. Bush's Strange Letter To MCC
West Hollywood, California) A letter from President George W. Bush has two gay pastors scratching their heads. The letter, on White House stationary, congratulates the Metropolitan Community Churches on its 35th anniversary, and was written the same week the president was observing anti-gay Marriage Protection Week.

The letter was received by MCC Moderator Dr. Troy Perry (left), and Rev. Neil Thomas, senior pastor of Metropolitan Community Church of Los Angeles.

The LGBT Protestant denomination was founded by Perry in 1968. Today, MCC provides almost 300 local churches for its 43,000 members and adherents in 22 countries.

5. Here's the link:
http://www.365gay.com/newscontent/111103bushMCC.htm

"By encouraging the celebration of faith and sharing of God's love and boundless mercy, churches like yours put hope in people's hearts and a sense of purpose in their lives," the President's letter says. "This milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on your years of service and to rejoice in God's faithfulness to your congregation.”

But, in his proclamation endorsing "Marriage Protection Week," Bush wrote, "Marriage is a sacred institution, and its protection is essential to the continued strength of our society. Marriage Protection Week provides an opportunity to focus our efforts on preserving the sanctity of marriage and on building strong and healthy marriages in America."

Marriage Protection Week was organized by such Religious Right leaders as Jerry Falwell, Dr. James Dobson, the Southern Baptist Convention and the American Family Association to deny equality under the law to gays and lesbians.

MCC calls the two positions a mixed-message at best, or politics at worst.

“How does one denounce the right of gays and lesbians to marry in their churches and suggest they are incapable of having healthy marriages in one moment, and in the next rejoice in God's faithfulness to a gay and lesbian congregation that performs such same-sex marriages?” asked Rev. Thomas.

8. It has "Church" as part of the name
perhaps Bush will invite MCC to reap the benefits of his faith-based initiative.

7. please, form letter
the White House sends these out by the dozen every day "congratulations on ____" pretty much all it takes is someone asking them to do it. no one does research. it's like the time when a Texas legisator got the State Senate to praise Albert de Salvo and it passed unanimously. (you can read about it here, if you'd like: http://www.snopes.com/legal/desalvo.htm )

9. Priceless! What was that, Fool me once....?

State Capitol, Texas Presidential candidate G.W. Bush prides himself on presiding over 121 executions with perfect oversight. State representative Tim Moore wanted to show how careful the legislative process was in the state. He sponsored a bill praising Albert Salvo, a man whose "unconventional techniques involving population control and applied psychology" had already been noted by the state of Massachusetts. The Texas politicians, never wanting to be outdone by any state, unanimously passed a resolution praising Albert Salvo. Salvo is better known as The Boston Strangler.

Read thru it real fast and that last paragraph just didn't sink in! Gave up caffine this week, obviously not doing too well. Seems I've lost the ability to engage brain before speaking/posting.
Sorry, and thanks for setting me straight on this one.
Geez, I gotta be more careful.

14. What will Pat and Jerry say?
Pat of "nuke the state department" (because they were not favorable to his favorite African Despot, Joseph Taylor); and Jerry of "911 was the fault of homosexual's, liberals, abortionists, etc."

Wonder if they will catch wind of this little snafu (eg the form letter sent out). Bet even if they did - they would say nothing. Unless some lesser known but up and comer fundie televangelist brought it up... then they would probably have to react one way or the other... Wonder what the fundie religious right voter would think...
