PHILADELPHIA - Lawmakers opposed to a deal that would give a state-owned United Arab Emirates business a stake in operating six major U.S. seaports - including Tioga Marine Terminal in Philadelphia - may have enough support to withstand a veto by President Bush.

U.S. Rep. Robert Brady, D-1, joined Weldon at a press conference Wednesday to discuss legislation that would enable Congress to review foreign investment in the U.S. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which approved the DP World transaction, is not currently required to consult Congress.

Weldon said he has received about 5,000 phone calls, e-mails and letters from constituents opposed to giving the Arab firm a role in managing the ports.

1. I live in the tri state (PA,NJ & DE all 3 affected) I believe that there
is a contract up for renewal in May for PA (between the stevedores (UAE) and PA ports)) that might be a problem. (D-Gov. Rendell). I was waiting for someone to post about this, because I heard the reported info, but was on the puter in another room so wasn't sure about the details.

Has anyone posited, they may not need Diebold, look at the ports in question. It kinda freaks you out when you live in a blue area, and the ports they are naming!

2. The UAE company arrived Mon. evening and are staryin at the embassy
in DC. They are here to discuss the problem (with who I do not know)--but Cnn seemed perturbed that they would not give interviews.
