Vatican hosts conference on embryo ethics

VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican is hosting an international conference on the ethics surrounding embryos and in-vitro fertilization procedures and its position that human life deserves legal protection starting at conception.

Monsignor Elio Sgreccia, who heads the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life, said he believed current scientific and philosophical data supports the Vatican's view, set out in a 1995 papal letter to bishops, the encyclical "Evangelium Vitae."

But Sgreccia told reporters Friday that "all the cards are on the table" at next week's conference, which will address issues like pre-implantation genetic screening in which embryos can be checked to see if they carry disease.
