Democrats See Hope of Winning Governors' Seats
February 26, 2006

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/26/politics/26govs.html

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 — At a time when considerable political attention is focused on the Democrats' uphill struggle to recapture Congress, leaders of both parties say Democrats appear to be in a much stronger position on another pivotal battlefield this November, the contests for governors.

Democrats have a strong chance to pick up a number of seats held by Republicans while keeping seats even in states that President Bush won in 2004, potentially allowing Democrats to put their view of government on display across a bigger swath of the country and strengthening their position for the 2008 presidential race, party officials said.

Among the states that could flip to the Democratic column are Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Nevada and Ohio, all general election battlegrounds carried by Mr. Bush, as well as New York and perhaps California.

"From a math standpoint, we've got a tough row to hoe this year," Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, the head of the Republican Governors Association, said as the National Governors Association gathered here this weekend for its annual Washington meeting.

1. "perhaps" California? "PERHAPS"?????
Holy shit. If Californians allow that low-grade actor in office for a full term, I'm going to lose a lot of respect for the Democratic political machine there.

3. I think CA is very much in play. Arnold's "special election" was a Rubicon
he's having a hard time recrossing.

overwhelmingly democratic, but we seem to "elect" republican governors.. Never could figure it out, really..

Deukmejian
Wilson
Reagan
and of course...arnie..

The kicker is this..

Before we got all these republican governors, CA was the envy of the world when it came to education and quality of life..

and now??

not so much :(

2. I am going to change from Party Affiliation this election
from Independent to Democrat. Amont other reasons, I HAVE to vote in the Primary now in order to vote against Suozzi. Yes, I live on Long Island. Suozzi is nothing more than a Republican Lite.

The fact that he is touting his Italian ethnicity and compromise position on abortion is enough to make me puke.

That from an Italian/American Mother. You MUST know, don't mess with us, Tommy Boy.

4. Suozzi may end up keeping NY red in Gubernatorial level
if he hurts Spitzer. Judging by his donations, I think that he's in this to Bloody Spitzer.

6. Even if he bloodies Spitzer...
the Republican campaign is so disorganized and divided (the Conservative Party will probably nominate a different candidate), it's going to be nearly impossible for them to pull out a save,

5. What?!?
What about Massachusetts and Alabama? We have a better chance to pick up those two certainly than Nevada and Florida...according to several polls.
