11. No one could beat him for "shooting his cuffs" before writing something
That little flip of the wrists that would take forever and drive Ralph crazy...I believe he said he got that from his dad? Grandfather?

Sweet guy.

8. I just read a quick online bio...
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 04:50 PM by Dookus
of Art Carney. He was wounded at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion.

As for getting his due, he had 5 Emmy's and a Best Actor Oscar. All well-deserved.

On edit: he had 6 emmy's. Five for the Honeymooners and one later one for a tv movie.

9. Harry and Tonto was a great movie!
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 05:00 PM by alg0912
Art also did an early Twilight Zone in which he played a drunken dept store Santa who unexpectedly becomes the real thing...

On edit: I counted 7 Emmys on IMDB.com, and Oscar and a Golden Globe! Wow!!!

13. One of my favorite skits with Carney & Gleason:
Gleason's character was suppose to be a contestant in a show similar to "Name that Tune." In preparation for the contest, he would get quizzed by Art Carney who would play tunes on the piano. Art would always start their sessions playing the same silly tune and it would drive Gleason mad.

Finally, the time for the contest comes and Gleason is doing a wonderful job answering the questions. He finally reaches the final double or nothing question and he goes for broke. On the next question he either doubles his money or loses it all. He decides to go for it, and what song comes up? But the silly tune that Art would play at the beginning of each session. Gleason gets that deer-in-the headlights look in his face and you know it was the one title he never bothered to remember.

I think he claimed that Ed Nortan was the author for his answer.

on edit: I think it was a Stephen Foster song.

27. I thought he always prefaced everything he played with
the "Harry Lime" theme (from the film The Third Man). I feel pretty
sure that was it.

16. The Song was "Swanee River"
Yeah, that was a good one. When Gleason couldn't remember the song, all he could say was, "huma, huma, huma". Whenever I think of manhole covers, Brooklyn, and fire escapes, I'll always think of Ed Norton.

The Honeymooners was so funny, especially when you compare it to the stupid shit that's on TV now. Boy, I'm feeling nostalgic today. Anybody else got any other Honeymooners favorites?

I have many memories of "The Honeymooners", which was my dad's favorite TV show. My dad was also a WWII vet, how ironic that he passed away on Veteran's Day.

30. Why I oughtta ...
Quotes From Honeymooners' Ed Norton

By The Associated Press

Some quotations from Ed Norton, Art Carney's character in "The Honeymooners."

A sewer worker is like a brain surgeon. We're both specialists.

Like we say in the sewer, time and tide wait for no man.

As we say in the sewer, here's mud in your eye.

If pizzas were manhole covers, the sewer would be paradise.

Ralph: It's rush hour. We'll never be able to get across town in this traffic.

Ed: Trust me. We'll go by sewer.

Ralph: I hope that you realize that water always seeks its level.

Ed: Yes, we've heard rumors to that effect down in the sewer.

Ralph: I promise you this, Norton. I'm gonna learn. I'm gonna learn from here on in how to swallow my pride.

Ed: That ought not to be too hard. You've learned how to swallow everything else.

36. Art Carney
Truly one of the first television greats. It's a shame we don't get to see The Honeymooners on television anymore.
