BRIAN DICKERSON: DeVos, Fieger hope commoner can relate
BRIAN DICKERSON: DeVos, Fieger hope commoner can relate
February 27, 2006

Two of the richest guys in Michigan are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars this month on TV advertising campaigns designed to curry favor with Joe Sixpack and his working-class buddies.

One multimillionaire's 30-second spot says he's ready to go to bat for "folks who want to work and maybe through no fault of their own, their prior company went out of business."

The other multimillionaire's ad says he's the only one fighting to protect ordinary Michiganders from the politicians, mega-corporations and government bureaucrats who seek to devour them whole.

~snip~

DeVos is a conservative Republican (although his first state-wide TV buy doesn't consider that a fact worth mentioning). Fieger is a liberal Democrat (although plenty of Democrats would rather you didn't mention that, either).

DeVos is a devout evangelical Christian from Grand Rapids; Fieger's an irreverent provocateur from Oak Park.

~snip~

DeVos and Fieger both boast bank accounts larger than those of some sovereign nations. Both are audibly tan. And both have been unable to resist the lure of elective politics, despite considerable evidence that neither is especially suited to it.

2. I don't see Fieger as a serious contender for AG
or anything else for that matter. I hope he nor Bowen get the nom., Bowen's anti-choice.

7. Hi Julie!
FIRST time I have EVER disagreed with you!

:hi:

I like Fieger, I've met him a couple of times, and HE WOULD KICK *SS as AG!

Really DIG out the garbage.

AG isn't an elected office, though, is it? Isn't it some kind of appointment?

3. DeVos FRIGHTENS me. No, SERIOUSLY.
I'm gay, and this guy would be all too happy to expand the prohibition on marriage to a prohibition on gays if he could.

Expect MI to become Fundy Central if he gets into any office at all.

8. Worse than Engler could ever conceive of being
Engler knew better than to support the DeVos/Cardinal Maida plan for vouchers. He also never banned gays from adopting kids or becoming foster parents.

DeVos is a christian dominionist. He also made his fortune fleecing others in a pyramid scheme. I think Granholm will win re-election if she doesn't take re-election for granted. She will carry Wayne, Washtenaw, Ingham and Genesee Counties fairly easily. She needs to get lots of votes in Macomb and Oakland counties, and could get a lot of northern votes if she keeps working toward really good environmental policies. She will have to visit every part of the state, even those where she might not get a lot of votes (UP, Livingston and Ottawa Counties) and she cannot miss the bridge walk this Labor Day. No votes can be taken for granted, that is what cost Blanchard dearly in 1990.

My guess is that the GOP will again try to tie her to Kwame Kilpatrick. Unfortunately, due to her prior employment for Wayne County, that's not very difficult to do. Compared to the majority of the Detroit City Council these days, Kwame looks positively mature. this Zoo fight is really ugly on the part of certain council members, particularly the ever-corrupt Barbara Rose Collins and Monica Conyers referring to critics as "mahody boodie" or whatever was not helpful. Not that Brooks Patterson's comments were very helpful, either. I just feel bad for Ken Cockrel, Jr, the city council president.
