The Charlotte ObserverU.S. Sen. John Edwards makes the same vow in his presidential campaign that he did during his 1998 Senate race: No money from Washington lobbyists. ---
Edwards' campaign, however, has accepted donations from at least 39 lobbyists in Washington, Raleigh and cities in 10 other states this year, according to an Observer analysis of campaign finance reports. Those donors have given $40,792.
Of the 39, at least four were registered to lobby in Washington, D.C., in 2002. Those four haven't registered this year, but wouldn't be required to until August. The four -- John Podesta, James Rosapepe, Victoria Rollins and Abbe Lowell -- gave $5,000 combined.
Jennifer Palmieri, Edwards' campaign spokeswoman, said the campaign would return any contributions from Washington lobbyists who are registered for 2003.
Palmieri said Edwards rejects money from lobbyists in Washington, but not from lobbyists registered in state capitals, a distinction that Edwards does not always make in speeches and question-and- answer sessions with voters. Edwards did specifically identify Washington lobbyists when he swore off their contributions in his 1998 campaign.
"There may be donations from folks that lobby state governments," Palmieri wrote, responding to an e-mailed question. "Since Senator Edwards doesn't represent state governments, there is no conflict for him in accepting money from state lobbyists. If any of our donations are from Washington lobbyists, we will return them." ---
