One killed as Muslim anti-Bush protest turns violent in India
NEW DELHI (AFP) - One person was killed and dozens injured during demonstrations by Muslims in northern India against President George W. Bush that turned violent hours before the US leader was to wind up his maiden trip to India.

Police in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh state, used teargas and truncheons to break up clashes between Muslims and Hindus when the protests degenerated into fierce street riots, said city police chief Ashutoch Pandey.

"Muslims after offering prayers went around ordering shops to down their shutters to protest President Bush's visit to India which sparked off the clashes because the Hindus objected," Pandey said.

"One person was killed in the exchange of fire between the two communities," he said. "Dozens of people were injured in the clashes."

Protests by Muslims also turned violent in southern Hyderabad city during a four-hour visit by Bush to the hi-tech hub, police said. Five people were injured in clashes between riot police and protestors, they said.

How many people have died because of his wanton ignorance, stupidity, ambivalence and/or stubbornness? 10's of thousands, 100's of thousands?

9. India topped a global survey on positive attitudes to the U.S. --

....Still, India topped a global survey on positive attitudes to the U.S. last year carried out by the U.S.-based Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, with 71 percent of Indians reporting a favorable perception of America.

While there have been numerous protests this week across India against Bush's three-day visit, with the crowds at some totaling tens of thousands of people, the numbers fell far short of the millions that organizers had threatened to bring to the streets ahead of the visit.

In Hyderabad, protesters waving red and black banners marched three kilometers (two miles) to a rally where they burned an effigy of Bush and conducted a mock funeral. Some carried posters of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

"We are protesting against
George Bush because he is a warmonger. We are demanding the evacuation of American troops from Iraq," said B.V. Raghavulu, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
