LA race is lost - NO Tribune endorses Jindal
There was some hope that the Tribune (an African American publication) would choose not to endorse a candidate (since both are pretty conservative). It appears that hope was in vain. I see no way to win this race now.

"But even more importantly, African Americans must redefine their political interests and make it clear that for too long we've been taken for granted and no longer are our votes free."

http://www.neworleanstribune.com/notes.html

A year ago we were certain we would take back the majority of Gubernitorial seats. Not only did we fail due to a remarkable GOP sweep of several states, but we are now at , what? 20 seats?. And what's the biggest state with a Democratic governor?

1. Okay.......one word to the African American voting community:

What an excellent primo time for you to be suddenly getting all fucking self-righteous about being taken for granted? Good job, and great timing!

I am white....and I friggin HATE having my vote taken for granted by the democratic party. But I don't think I will be THROWING my vote away to the conservatives anytime in the next few years "to take a friggin stand".

Someone is being paid off, and paid well.........

2. Jindal wasn't going to lose this race. I said that weeks ago.
The Trib probably knows that.

14. I'm not sure of that yet.

I've not followed the race very closely, but I would never count a Democrat out in a statewide race in Louisiana as long as he's breathing, and even that might not be a strict necessity. Do not give up the ship too easily.

That said, Jindal is an interesting guy. He's obviously a brilliant fellow, whatever his politics. But what may be worth watching, should he win, is his ability to shake up the racial and political status quo in the South

Here is a son of immigrants and a man "of color" about to (maybe) get elected Governor in the deep South. Doug Wilder made history in Virginia, but most of northern Virginia isn't really southern anymore. Louisiana is still the deep, deep South. Another barrier may be about to crumble.

Here also is a classic outsider, a son of immigrants, whose claim to fame is academic high achievement and a precocious professional career, running in a state and region notoriously dominated by entrenched good old boy political networks.

Too bad he's a Republican, but he is still an interesting fellow to watch.

8. BOTH candidates were "conservative"
So you would be "throwing away" your vote either way.

The only question is what label do they put next to their name? And who would they support for Majority Leader?

12. You have made their point very well, how DARE they decide for themselves
If you read the article and the companion piece down the side, you will find their reasons and how they reached them. They studied the candidates, interviewed people who knew the candidates and interviewed the candidates themselves. They debated the pros and cons and made a hard fought over decision.

I guess their only mistake was they didn't clear it with you first. How arrogant is it to believe and accuse someone of being "paid off" if they don't come to the same conclusion as you over something as subjective as political candidates?

Having read the article, I do not believe the endorsement was a backlash for being taken for granted, but your reply to it is certainly an indicator that they could have felt that way.

13. Since The Majority Of Whites Vote Republican Anyways
Maybe you should start taking your "throwing away you vote" message elsewhere.

Anyways, don't you worry, blacks have been voting overwhelmingly Democratic even if they don't overwhelmingly identify themselves as Democrats, so I don't really think a mass exodus by the black voters is going to be in the stars soon.

5. Again, no choice.............
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 10:31 AM by DumpGump
"Perhaps it’s because we have expressed disgust and mistrust with politics as usual that some of our friends and associates seem intent on scaring us to death. Numerous are the predictions of what will happen should an energetic, 32-year-old Rhodes Scholar of east Indian descent with a right-of-center platform emerge victorious in the November 15 gubernatorial election. Dire are the consequences, they foretell, if African Americans don’t rally around Kathleen Blanco and her equally right-of-center message."

Until Democrats start being Democrats again, not Republican "Lites", we will continue to lose these contests. This party has veered too far to the right and must return to it's roots if this trend is to be reversed. I'm not at all surprised at this. The people really have no choice. Either a Republican on the right, or a Democrat on the right. People tend to go with the original rather than the copy. When will this party wake up and smell the coffee?

11. To me this is more of a case of the machine being used against itself.
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 10:38 AM by AP
Blanco, I sense, was brought up by the machine. Jindal is part of a national machine (he's a Bush insider) but comes across as the anti-machine candidate.

The Democrats shouldn't have been afraid to run a fresh face.

Sometimes you have to cut loose the people who worked their way up within the system to win an election.

9. Blanco turned out to be the worst candidate we could have nominated
a pro-life woman who didn't support Mary L last year and now expecting democrats to rally around her?

15. Yep she is WEAK....and a DINO.....this whole thing STINKS......
.....I loathe Blanco and can't stand Jindal...seems the fix was in when she won the primary IMHO...Ieyoub and Leach were the two strongest candidates the Dems had...I voted for Buddy Leach because he was the ONLY one of them all who was telling it like it is...he wanted to raise the minimum wage here in La. and raise taxes...he wanted to get seniors prescription meds from Canada...and was telling the oil and gas industry to PAY their fair share of taxes too or GET THE HELL OUTTA HERE!!! *sickened sigh* But then again Cleo Fields was another highly valued candidate also William Jefferson...I'm a white female and I voted for both of them...not just because they were Democrats but because they knew the FACTS and could explain the issues.....not just repeat ad naeausem a platform speech...ahh well :evilfrown:

10. To answer your last questions, we will have 21 seats
and the largest state with a Dem governor will be Illinois.

16. Thanks "goober".
Is there no longer an Independant Gov?

Still, 29-21 is not particularly impressive when I though the "worst case" before the 2002 election was 26-27 Democrats.
