'Britons' caught up in Iraq shootout
Two men were burned to death in their car after a shootout with Iraqi police in the southern Iraqi city of Basra today and security officials said the victims were British citizens.

In London, a Foreign Office spokesman said he was aware of unsubstantiated reports of an incident involving non-Arabs.

A third person in the car, also believed to be a British citizen, was wounded and rushed away by police, said police Capt. Mushtaq Kadhim.

Two Iraqi policemen and two civilians also were wounded in the shooting, he said.

3. Reading between the lines on this one, and between the lines is UGLY.
Three British citizens get into a shootout with Iraqi police. Where have I heard something like that before? Oh, right here!

Oh, it also took place in Basra! They don't have the best relationship with them after springing their covert agents via force from the police/militia in charge of the area.

Now there's been another altercation and the police have "rushed away" the third person in the car. I wonder if the previous incident, which just happened in the last 6 months would still be fresh in their mind. My bet is yes.

If the British military desires this UK citizen as much as it did the other two, I wonder if will resort to similar tactics to spring them from Iraqi custody.

7. I wonder who's killing and kidnapping Shia lawmakers in Basra.

BASRA: A Shia lawmaker was seriously wounded yesterday when gunmen fired on his car near Iraq's second city of Basra, police said.

One of his aides was killed and two bodyguards injured in the attack, police Capt. Mushtaq Kadhim said.

Gunmen in two speeding cars chased down Qasim Attiyah Al Jbouri's two-vehicle convoy on a road just north of Basra and opened fire, he said. Al Jbouri's four-wheel drive vehicle overturned after it was hit with several bullets and the attackers fled, Kadhim said.

It was the second time Al Jbouri was targeted in just over a weeks. On February 24, gunmen kidnapped three of his children and freed them unharmed hours later.
