USAT/Gallup/CNN Poll: Bush approval rating hits new low (36%)

Poll: Bush approval rating hits new low
By Mark Memmott, USA TODAY

President Bush's "approval rating" has sunk to a new low according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup poll released Monday.

The latest results show only 36% of those polled saying they "approve" of the way Bush is handling his job. Bush's previous low was 37%, set last November.

Sixty percent of those polled said they "disapprove" of Bush's performance. That matches an all-time worst rating hit last November and again two weeks ago.

Democrats have their biggest advantage since 1992 when poll respondents are asked if they favor Democratic or Republican congressional candidates. The spread: Democrats over Republicans 55% — 39%, a 16-percentage-point gap.

The public's approval rating of Bush, according to the poll, slipped below 50% last May and has been hovering just above or below 40% since October. Two weeks ago, Bush's approval rating was 38%....

39. I do know this - Bill Schneider isn't a bit happy.
The American Enterprise Institute shill who masquerades on CNN as an "independent" analyst has a rawther see-through face. He'd be shitty at poker. He gives away his feelings so often while reporting on stuff like this. I was at the bank watching the TV monitor tuned to CNN, and while the sound was muted, you could see it clearly. CLEARLY. They went to Schneider and his on-camera demeanor was as sober as an undertaker. Usually he's somewhat personable, his eyes crinkle at the outside edges and get a certain sparkle to him when the camera's on him. He usually gets this impish, "benign" little smile when he's on. But that seems true only when he has the "good fortune" to have something bad to report about Democrats, and something good to report about bush in particular and republi-CONS in general. When things aren't going well for his personal favorites, he's very somber and sober and no smiles, no twinkle in the eye, no friendly ease on camera, it's all seriousness and ponderousness.

EAT IT, schneider. He's YOUR boy. These are YOUR people. Aren't they just doing fabulously these days? You must be SO proud.

He "tries" to be objective, but his face is just too transparent. He gives himself away every time.

41. It's also significant for Gallup. It tends to skew republi-CON all the
time, because, more often than not, the general survey pool routinely tends to have more republi-CONS in it than Dems, so realistically, you have to subtract another five points or so to get a better idea of public sentiment.

If Gallup says 36 percent, I'd guess more along the lines of LOW 30's. My husband says it'll be in the 20's by IMPEACHMENT time (January 07 - when the DEMS take back the House of Reps, and John "my hero!" Conyers assumes the chairmanship of the House Judiciary Committee).

No one deserves it more.

Keep visualizing...

Democrats have their biggest advantage since 1992 when poll respondents are asked if they favor Democratic or Republican congressional candidates. The spread: Democrats over Republicans 55% — 39%, a 16-percentage-point gap.

57% said sending U.S. troops to Iraq was a mistake — up from 55% two weeks earlier and the highest reading since a 59% result last October.

Between the drooling sociopaths who make up the GOP hardcore and the braindead who approve of anyone who is "president," it's pretty tough to get below 20 percent. Only Dick Cheney has ever pulled it off that I know of, and he's only vp. This guy is shit on toast.

35. Now on CNN.com...Concern over Iraq drives Bush's rating to new low
Nearly half of those polled said they believe Democrats would do a better job of managing the war -- even though only a quarter of them said the opposition party has a clear plan for resolving the situation. (Interactive: poll results)

Pollsters quizzed 1,001 adults between Friday and Sunday for the poll, which had a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Bush's approval rating of 36 percent is the lowest mark of his presidency in a Gallup poll, falling a percentage point below the 37 percent approval he scored in November. The last CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted February 28-March 1, put his job approval at 38 percent. (View Bush's second term approval ratings)

Sixty percent of those surveyed in the latest poll said they disapproved of his performance in office, the same figure as in the last poll. (Read full results document -- PDF)

42. Is it just Iraq though?
Is it just the war in Iraq or is a cumulation of bad economy, high gas prices, AWOL from Katrina and the Dubai debacle? I really if it is the one thing - admittedly a huge thing - but about 2 out of every 3 Americans think he's a failure on Iraq alone. Hey, if true or not true, this low approval numbers work for me. I think this is a chance for democrats to step up and get their message out to the disaffected.

Well, one that doesn't involve loss of life (the war in Iraq).

I always knew he'd sink sink sink in his second term. Farther than most presidents could ever imagine sinking.

I think no matter what, he'd always have 20% who are just insane freaks.

But it's good to know more people do have a LINE and he's crossed it. What took them so fucking long is the question.

50. WTF are these people on?
" There could be some good news for Bush in the poll. Economic conditions were rated "very good" or "somewhat good" by 59% of those polled. That was up six percentage points from the last time that question was asked, in September 2005.

Presidents often get blamed when the economy is ailing, but they also get some credit from voters when times are good."

75. I doubt that will last through the summer
We have a huge national debt, a large trade deficit, and the monthly M3 report has just been discontinued. Something tells me the plan is to fire up the presses and print our way out of the debt.

If that happens, the economy will grind to a halt faster than you can say "stagflation."

Peace

54. But once again:
• 67% said the president does not have "a clear plan for handling the situation in Iraq." That was an all-time high. But 68% also said Democrats in Congress do not have such a plan.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling! The Democrats don't have a plan! I'm tellin' ya, the Democrats don't have a PLAN!

They've been singing, "The Democrats don't have a plan" for every single situation, at every chance they get, and from every rooftop and soapbox. We need to combat this one somehow. This meme is as old as "tax and spend". The problem with fixing Iraq is that its broken! It may take more than just a plan to fix it.

63. That is a heck of post, Nostradammit --
that's it in a nutshell, and maybe Dems should make that exact point our slogan. These people are sending our country, and as much of the planet as they can manage, straight to hell in a handbasket. If they're not stopped, we're effed.

58. Unfortunately for Bush
He can't get out of this one by appointing an ultra-conservative for the S.Court.

59. Lucky for Bush he doesn't look at polls.
He probably thinks his approval is in the high 70's.

64. Is he going to resign?
Maybe one day he will wake up and say that's it I'm going back to my ranch - I've had enough?

65. As important as the 36% approval is the
60% disapproval.

There's only a squishy 4% left over. People aren't going from approval to 'Gee, I don't know' -- they are making the leap directly from approval to disapproval.

THAT is a serious number.

66. I heard 29% yesterday on The Al Franken Show on AAR
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 11:12 AM by Rob H.
He had Norm Ornstein on and when Al mentioned 36%, Norm pointed out that that number is Bush's job approval rating, but that his personal approval rating was at 29%. (He's still ahead of Cheney, though, whose personal approval ratings are currently circling the bowl at 18%.)

They both wondered what kind of people those 29% are and the smart-assed answer that popped into my head was this: they're idiots.

(Edited subject.)
