Maggie Inouye Dies

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 3/13/2006 2:19:00 PM

Maggie Inouye, wife of Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), died Monday after a long illness.

Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Inouye would be absent "for a while," as he accompanies his wife's body back to Hawaii. Reid said the couple had been married for 57 years, with Inouye proposing on the second date.

12. Indeed he was. I notice they still can't pronounce his name right
Senator Inouye was an exemplary part of that committee. He's done good things in his political life. I was surprised to hear that he was also key to getting the new Smithsonian museum of Native America funded and up and running.

My condolences on his loss.

15. He also is missing an arm, lost it in WW2
He was a heroic member of the "Go For Broke" Regiment. Chestful a' medals he got, in exchange for that arm...he'd probably as soon have the arm back. He kept tossing grenades with the other arm after the first one got blown to bits.

Tidbit of info: He got a DSC for his battlefield heroism, which is the second highest award. Of course, since he was a 'nipponese' they couldn't give him the award he merited. President Clinton corrected that in 2000, and upgraded the award to the well-deserved Medal of Honor.

A good guy. I feel for him.

19. My thoughts are with him
He used to call my mom "his sister" and when she died he sent flowers even though they hadn't talked in years. He was there for my family when we were grieving. I'll let him know that he is in our thoughts now.
