U.S. Expats in UK Hit by Wave of 'Anti-Bushism'

LONDON (Reuters) - The British abandoned their stiff upper lips and hugged Americans after 9/11. Now much of that goodwill has evaporated and the blame is being laid firmly at the door of George W. Bush.

After the twin tower attacks, a military band broke with tradition and played the American national anthem at the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Less than 18 months later, one million people took to London's streets to protest against the forthcoming U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites).

Now with President Bush (news - web sites) heading to these shores next week to see Tony Blair (news - web sites) for what should have been a triumphal reunion with his closest ally, the 200,000 Americans living in London are reflecting on how times have changed.

They recall with wonder how the British dropped their innate reserve after the attacks on September 11, 2001.

But now, after wars in Afghanistan (news - web sites) and Iraq where British and Americans fought side by side, they face a wave not of anti-Americanism but anti-Bushism

3. I was living in England when Nixon was president and it was
very much the same thing; I learned really quickly to say I was Canadian if I wanted to avoid being harrassed...
Thanks for posting this...let's spread the word!

8. Until JR Ewing effaced the memory of Lee Harvey Oswald...
...even for the foreign language challenged, the word "Dallas" elicited a negative response in France... often scowls, sad head shakes and pantomiming shouldering a rifle. :-(

4. "America is now something of a rogue state, a pariah nation"
"There was a lot of goodwill to tap into and it took the incredible talent of George Bush to piss it all away in two years."

Great article. Everyone gets it except for 90% of those living in the USA who only see what the pro-Bush corporate media wants them to see.

5. I hate the pat ending to that story....
"Oh, but the brotherhood made in WWII, that'll never go away..." Yeah, right. The united States of Halliburton is doing all it can to alienate the world, and the veterans of WWII are getting near death day by day. And when there's no one living to carry the memories of WWII...poof! Bye bye goodwill......

9. Exactly.
I dont remember WWII, and now that I see the difference between reality and what is reported I am not sure what I believe about it.

Either way this is souring peoples view of americans. I know its not all americans but you know what people can be like!

6. Unfortunate, but expected.
I've got some Maple Leafs folks can borrow if you need 'em. It must be tough to be a reasonable American over there.
