Cheney Says Iraq Doubters Are Wrong
Vice President Cheney Says Despite Tension in Iraq, the Situation Is Improving

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. Mar 21, 2006 (AP)— Vice President Dick Cheney asserted Tuesday that the situation in Iraq is continually getting better, taking on war critics while acknowledging misgivings many Americans have about the administration's strategy.

"Progress has not come easily but it has been steady and we can be confident going forward," the vice president told an enthusiastic military crowd.

...

He conceded: "There is no doubt that the situation in Iraq is still tense."

...

"At times you may wonder if your fellow citizens truly realize the extent of your achievements," Cheney said to the about 3,000 troops and family members gathered in a chilly hangar. "I want you to know that Americans do realize it and we do not take our military for granted."

7. Memo to Cheney...
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 02:13 PM by Mithras61
When a country's leaders say that the country is in a civl war, why would you waste your time insisting it isn't unless you're trying to appear to be in denial?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/03/19/uirq.xml&sSheet=/portal/2006/03/19/ixportaltop.html

Former Iraqi PM insists civil war has broken out
(Filed: 19/03/2006)

Iraq is in the grip of civil war, according to the country's former prime minister.

Allawi: 'sectarianism will spread'

Iyad Allawi warned that the cycle of violence would soon spiral completely out of control, and Europe and the US would not be spared the consequences.

British ministers have repeatedly denied civil war is either imminent or inevitable in Iraq.

But Mr Allawi told the BBC: "It is unfortunate that we are in civil war. We are losing each day as an average 50 to 60 people throughout the country, if not more.

"If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is."

Over 70% Americans belive Iraq is in/heading to all-out civil war; the more these stupid MFers, Washington Dick and Washington George, deny what's so obvious even to MFing stupid rightwingnuts, the more Americans become aware of the fact that Washington Dick & Washington George are stupid, ignorant, incompetent, lying MFing assholes.

The thing is that they can never come up with any examples; not ONE.

until then I'll just believe my own lying eyes when they see dead bodies and injured children and very little or no progress.

13. Who doesn't?
Seriously, there isn't a liberal I know who actually wants this shitty situation to remain shitty.

Point is, even if the War Fairy came down, sprinkled magic fairy dust all over Iraq and got everyone to stop shooting and blowing each other up, the Iraq occupation would still be an abject failure. The Administration seems to think we have terrible memories, that we've forgotten about how they'd claimed it would all be a cakewalk, and basically self-financed.

well, we haven't.

But he cited the skills of U.S. soldiers, the desire of Iraqis to be free, and strides in training Iraqi security forces as reasons to be heartened about Iraq now and in the future.

18. Dick: The man who doesn't know insurgent attacks are at record highs
Pentagon report: Insurgent attacks hit postwar high

ARLINGTON, Va. — Insurgent attacks in Iraq reached a postwar high in the four months preceding Jan. 20, according to a Iraq progress report issued Friday by the Pentagon.

More than 550 attacks took place in Iraq from Aug. 29, 2005, to Jan. 20, 2006, according to the latest “security and stability” report the Defense Department is required to send lawmakers every four months.

Speaking to Pentagon reporters Friday, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs said that the survey’s conclusions “were not good,” but that “loving us is not what it’s about.”

Awareness of the relative unpopularity of U.S. troops “is one of the reasons we want to turn over the battlespace” to the Iraqi security forces, Rodman said.

19. Brings to mind that Beatles' classic: "Getting Better"
McCartney: I have to believe it's getting better, a little better all the time.

Lennon: It can't get much worse.

No matter how often the liars repeat their lies, no matter how shrilly they repeat them, they cannot change lies into truth. The Iraqi resistance, a rag-tag body of irregulars, has defeated the most powerful military in human history. Now it's just a question of how many more people will die in the pursuit of a delusion.

21. Is this purpose of our military
to give Iraq "freedom"? I thought our military was to defend me. Is Bush president of Iraq? Why are we there? Why? What does Iraq have to do with me? It is no threat to me. It has no WMD. It has no ties to 9/11. Why don't I have one represenative to call this sham war the pointless sham war it is?

Why are my tax dollars being spent by the billions on a country that isn't America and has nothing to do with me? This and a few other questions that no one ever asks in America. I'm sick to death of Iraq. I know it's not "liberal" to say all this. I'm sure many felt this way when the word was Vietnam for twenty years. Why can't we find a populist Dem to dare to say this? Please oh please. Bring the troops home to defend me and let Iraq do whatever it needs to do. We can't save them. All we can do is continue to make it worse under the guise of stopping their ultimate civil war that will happen anyway.

28. And of course some good did come out of Hitler's regime...
... the only two things I can think that are good to have come out of the Nazi regime is the German autobahn system, and the Volkswagen Beetle. And even with the Beetle it took the Americans to recognize that building Beetles would help get Germany back on its feet after WWII.

I am not saying for one minute that the good the Nazi regime did counteracts their bad. What I am trying to say here (and probably unsuccessfully) is that although our boys over there are doing their best to do good, (and good is getting done and of course it's not getting reported) there's too much bad going on to make it completely unnoticeable. Does it matter how many new schools get built when the students are too afraid to go to school, fearing for being blown up - just for going to school? Does it matter that new hospitals are built, when the doctors that would staff them are leaving Iraq, again fearing for their lives?

From what I can gather, the US Army appears to be a relic of the Cold War. It's geared up still to fight a major battle against a major aggressive superpower. I'm sorry, I am not a military specialist, and it might be my nationality clouding my opinion here, but I feel that the British forces in southern Iraq have on the whole (and yes they have had their problems too) done a better job than the Americans and are better trained for this kind of situation than the American forces. Feel free to debate and debunk this until the cows come home (I may well be wrong. Please correct me!) but I feel that the US forces were prepared to fight War A when in fact it's War B and it's a whole different war.

Can I see the good that the Bush regime has done in Iraq? Well, deposing Saddam was a good thing - I don't think anyone can disagree that Saddam was a dictator and didn't need to be in control of Iraq. The way his administration went about it was all wrong. Containment in Iraq was working to some extent - but the sanctions on the other hand was not (and was in fact damaging the indiginous populations). Yes, the inspections would probably have proven that Saddam didn't have WMD. Yes, Saddam would have probably declared that the US's failure to invade was a 'victory'. But we could have worried about more precious things. Like the war back home. The war on poverty.

Anyway, rant over. Thanks for listening.

Mark.
