Grand jury cites racial disparity in Austin policing
Double standard in law enforcement cause for concern, panel says

Thursday, November 13, 2003

Members of the Travis County grand jury that indicted an Austin police officer in connection with an on-duty shooting in June said in a report released Thursday that they are disturbed by "a different brand of law enforcement in the minority communities of East Austin."

The document calls on public officials to immediately address those concerns.

According to the report, young officers with limited training and little experience are interacting with residents of different races and that police are being placed in situations they are not prepared for.
