Colombian rebels release hostage video

Bogota - Leftist rebels holding foreign backpackers hostage in remote northern Colombia released a videotape of the captives looking worn and complaining of hunger.

"We have had to walk a lot, in places we never imagined existed in Colombia," Asier Huegen Echeverria, a 29-year-old Spaniard, said in the video. "We have suffered cold and hunger, and been feeding ourselves from the land."

The Spaniard, four Israelis, a Briton and a German - the only woman among the captives - were kidnapped by the National Liberation Army, known as the ELN, from archaeological ruins in the Sierra Nevada mountains on September 12. An eighth hostage, a British teenager, escaped soon after the kidnapping.
