Peru Lawmakers OK Charges Vs. Fujimori
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 01:43 PM by Say_What
Fujimori is charged with homicide, kidnapping, and assault charges for various human rights violations. With Peru's congress approving the charges, it wipes out his presidential immunity.

LIMA, Peru - Congress has approved more charges against ex-President Alberto Fujimori (news - web sites), alleging he trafficked arms to Colombian guerrillas, sanctioned torture, was responsible for the disappearance of student activists and mismanaged money.

Fujimori's government collapsed amid a corruption scandal in November 2000 and he has since lived in Japan, where he is a citizen and protected from extradition. He has denied any wrongdoing and insists the allegations against him are politically motivated.

Peruvian prosecutors have piled up more than a dozen charges against Fujimori — including illegal wiretapping, corruption and authorizing death squad killings — in hopes of pressuring Tokyo to extradite him.

Congress voted 63-0 with two abstention late Wednesday to approve charges that he took part in the air-drop of nearly 10,000 Kalashnikov rifles into the Colombian jungle in 1999 and 2000 for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

1. weird
I know Fujimori had some pretty tough dealings with the Sendero Luminoso, and in a conflict that violent, atrocities do happen. The Sendero Luminoso, or Shining Path are just as guilty for the carnage of that time period.

But why Fujimori would be arming FARC is beyond me.
