Attorney General Probes Faulty Body Armor
LITTLE ROCK — Attorney General Mike Beebe said Thursday that his office is investigating a Michigan company that sold 218 defective bulletproof vests to the state police earlier this year.

The Central Lake, Mich.-based Second Chance Body Armor, which sold the vests to numerous police agencies through a Justice Department grant program, also is being investigated by the U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft’s office.

Beebe said his office is investigating Second Chance for possible violations of the Arkansas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and asking the company to issue a full refund to the state police.

Last week, U.S. Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., asked Ashcroft to investigate Second Chance, according to published reports.

No wonder Ashcroft hasn't been working on the Wilson/Plame leak investigation...he's got more important things to do. Not knocking that the above news needs investigationg. It's just that there is little or no news re: Valerie Plame being outed and finding out which persons committed this crime. Seems to me that investigation could lead to the country's biggest political scandal if Rove and/or Bush are involved...and would certainly provide means to get Bush impeached for treason.. Just MHO...

1. it's a state attourney general
And to make matters worse, there are more companies than Second Chance selling Zylon-based body armor. Second Chance has recalled their body armor, but most companies have not.

What's amazing is the entire truth about Zylon and getting it to the law enforcement community was mostly the work of one man at tacticalforums.com.

3. Zylon armor is not issued to US troops
Only kevlar and spectra shield amarids are used in current military body armor. (spectra shield is the spall lining on their ceramic rifle plates)

I heard a statement that the military did not choose Zylon specifically due to its degredation, but I could not find any documentation to support this on DTIC.

Zylon is used by LEOs and individuals. Not much was known about Zylon failing in body armor until the first vest failed in a shooting, then there were several more failings after that. Lab tests have shown it broke down but body armor manufacturers used it anyway.

Interesting trivia tidbit: Dupont originally developed Zylon, significantly stronger than Kevlar, but then sold it in its entirety to a Japanese company, and continued to use the older kevlar instead.
