Afghan Blast Kills U.S. Special Ops GI

JALALABAD, Afghanistan -- A U.S. special operations soldier was killed Friday when his vehicle struck an explosive device in eastern Afghanistan, U.S. Central Command said.

The blast took place near Asadabad, in Kunar province where U.S.-led coalition forces launched a large-scale operation a week ago against insurgents.

7. We need to double the size of the army

For all this talk by Republicans of Defense, we have fewer actual soldiers than we have at any point since before our entry into the First World War. In Iraq, we have no more than 35,000 or so actual soldiers, the rest being support personel.

We waste hiddeous sums on gadgets and gizmos - hundreds of billions a year to prime Defense contractors - but when it comes down to it, the only part of the DoD that's actually underfunded is personel.

We should not be in Iraq, but the fact is we are. And if we're going to eke any sort of silver lining out of this, we're going to need to craft some sort of peaceful civil society. We cannot do that without security. We cannot provide security without more troops.
