WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Elections Commission has threatened to fine a Republican county commissioner $450,000 for participating in a campaign to oust three state Supreme Court justices.
The effort to remove the justices came after all three voted in favor of recounts that would have favored Democrat Al Gore during Florida's disputed 2000 presidential election. The three were chosen by Democratic governors.
But an administrative law judge said the Committee to Take Back Our Judiciary was a front for longtime Republican activist Roger Stone.
Administrative Law Judge Harry L. Hooper has recommended that the allegations against Palm Beach County Commissioner Mary McCarty be dropped because there's no proof she knew the committee accepted illegal donations and didn't personally handle donations or disperse funds.
McCarty said Stone asked her to head the committee. She put her name on a money-raising letter mailed sent to 350,000 voters that urged them to vote against Justices Harry Lee Anstead, Leander Shaw and Charles Wells. (snip/...)
