UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United States gained ground Friday in its campaign to reduce the number of anti-Israel resolutions adopted every year by the U.N. General Assembly and get the 191-member world body to approve what it considers more balanced measures.
An assembly committee approved five resolutions dealing with Palestinian refugees instead of the seven adopted last year - and for the first time one was a measure sponsored by the United States, co-sponsored by the European Union, and supported by Israel.
The Palestinians presented four resolutions and their supporters insisted on voting on them even though several overlapped the American draft. The votes were overwhelming in favor.
On the U.S. resolution, Arab nations and some of their supporters abstained, saying it was repetitious and didn't mention a 1949 resolution calling for the return of Palestinian refugees or compensation for them.
Nonetheless, the United States hailed the 109-0 vote for its resolution, despite the 54 abstentions. (snip/...)
