BAGHDAD - Four more Americans were killed in Iraq as the US military stepped up the fight against armed resistance to its occupation, foiling a planned rocket attack on a US base, while Washington moved to speed the handover of political power to Iraqis.
US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Friday denied that the American-led coalition in Iraq was in trouble, while US overseer Paul Bremer headed back to Baghdad from Washington with orders to accelerate the transfer of power and security control to Iraqis and spur the drafting of a constitution.
But US Secretary of State Colin Powell said later Friday that no new leader for Iraq had yet emerged, dealing a potential blow to members of the interim Iraqi Governing Council who may aspire to run the country.
On the ground in Iraq, two US soldiers were killed and three wounded in a bomb attack on their convoy 110 kilometres (70 miles) north of Baghdad, the US military said. (snip/...)
