Poll: Gonzalez, Newsom virtually tied

Bay City News Friday, November 14, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO --

The results of a poll released today has found both the San Francisco mayor's race and the County district attorney's race in a statistical dead heat.

According to the poll, Green Party mayoral candidate Matt Gonzalez is in the lead with 49 percent of the vote to Democrat Gavin Newsom's 47 percent.

The mayoral poll is based on responses from 524 registered voters who described themselves as "certain to vote" in the Dec. 9 runoff election.

In the general election on Nov. 4, Newsom received 41 percent of the vote and Gonzalez received 20. The survey found that voters who chose other candidates in that election now favor Gonzalez 2-to-1.

1. Wow
A green party candidate could become the first mayor of a major metropolitan city.

If he keeps this up, and wins, he could gain a lot of prominence. In fact, he could become a US Senator if Feinstein retires.

Plus, he would be a lot farther that the Libertarians. Although the Libertarians have more elected members, they don't have any candidates that are leaders of a major metropolitan city.

2. This is one time I'm hoping
for the Green. San Francisco deserves a genuine progressive. What's up with Willie Brown anyways? First, after threatening a recall against ahnold he joins his transition team. Then he poohpoohs jebbies threatening and disgusting remarks about making his city "endangered" and makes excuses for him. God, I'm sick of "Democrats" like these.

3. I hope Gonzalez wins.
It would send a wake up call to corrupt Democrats. I think the party has become too corrupted. For me it isnt so much an issue of right or left but of all the corruption in modern politics.

5. SF needs a true Progressive
I agree. I lived there from '86 to '94, and all we had was the usual run of democrats beholden to downtown financial interests. A Green Mayor in SF would be perfect. This is what the Green Party needs: elected officials in high-profile local and state positions. This is how you grow the party--not by running a presidential candidate who has no hope of winning. When the Greens have had a few US congresspeople for a few terms, that's when a serious Green candidate for President should step up to the plate.

6. Get the bums off the street,
The last time I was there (the first time since the early 80's) the city was absolutly filthy, the climax of the trip came when I walked out to my car to discover a bum standing on a milk crate pissing in the window that was open about an inch.

Explaining that one to the manager at the car rental place was LOTS of fun,

The city NEEDS to get all the crazies off the streets,
