Iraq Pipeline Bombed Despite New U.S. Protection

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saboteurs have set an oil pipeline in northern Iraq on fire as a new U.S.-led force was deployed to protect the area's infrastructure, witnesses said Monday.

Residents of Burjwari, a village near the Baiji refinery, said a bomb was placed overnight along a northern pipeline section carrying oil. Reuters television footage showed the pipeline on fire.

"We were preparing to break the (Ramadan) fast when we heard an explosion. This was the work of the resistance. We think the pipeline carried liquefied petroleum gas, but we are not sure," Qassem Mohammad said.

Iraq's northern oil infrastructure includes the export pipeline, which runs from its Kirkuk oilfields to Turkey's Mediterranean coast through the Baiji refinery.

Seems they aren't too happy about the "liberators" exporting their oil for them.

Can't imagine why..........

2. Virtually impossible to protect.....
If there are people willing to risk getting shot to do it, there's just now way to stop thm from blowing up pipelines or electric grids.

Could've told Rummy that quite some time ago.

11. apparently nobody in the white house or pentagon has read ...
... "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom". T.E. Lawrence's account
of a guerilla campaign in trans-Jordan during World War I.
One of his major targets was the Hedjaz Railway, which ran
for hundreds of miles through the desert, much like the
oil pipeline in question. Point is, the Turks spent a lot
more time repairing it than running trains on it.

I'm reminded of a news story I heard many years ago.
Somebody went to Viet Nam to interview one of the senior
Viet Cong strategists (name long since forgotten, sorry.)
He made the point that in Viet Nam, the irregular forces
were everywhere, and thus could strike anywhere at a moment's
notice. Which essentially put the U.S. forces in a reactive
position, never able to take the initiative.
