29. Bravo for her, but...
A peace campaigner slipped through intense security surrounding President Bush's visit to Britain and scaled the gates at Buckingham Palace.

...if she can "slip through" security, am thinking this means security is going to be mega-beefed-up more than it already is, making it virtually impossible for protesters to be in the areas nearby to let * et al. know their message.

4. Yeah just saw it on CNN
Ol' puppy Blitzer said that he "couldn't quite make out what it said on the flag, presumably something not very nice". Well duh! Thanks to Puppy Blitzer for enlightening us.

19. Pink-it's been tried, I'm sure
I'm troubled by a perception I have sensed on the part of some of our UK readers that there is no civil disobedience in the U.S. Your profile says that you are Scottish, so I don't know whether you have ever visited the U.S. White House. I visited during the Clinton years, and the place was surrounded by undercover Secret Service personnel. If you consider wearing sunglasses and earpieces "undercover," that is. Bush's paranoia, plus his winning ability to make himself hated internationally, has probably increased the security presence ten-fold.

In addition the Secret Service people, the interior compound is guarded by armed military personnel. You can't get near the gates until you go past uniformed military.

Frankly, you can't get near the White House if you look, act, or even breath in a way that the security people don't like. I've been astonished at some of the security breaches that have occured in the UK regarding the Royal family--like the fellow who climbed into the Queen's window a few years back. My God, he would have been shot before he breached the fence in the U.S. We've had three presidents assassinated in the last 150 years, and several other attempts, so perhaps the high security is justified.

24. How would you know if they were?
Thats the problem. NPR gave the estimates side of the expected protest in the "ten's of thousands" but all other estmantes I have seen range from 100,000 to posibly 200,000.

10. We need to flood CNN with e-mails
Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 12:41 PM by SoCalDem
reminding them that the British protests are not out of the ordinary.. People here hate bush just as much, but when we protest, we are kept in a holding pen, blocks away, and naturally CNN and other media chooses to downplay our numbers and choose not to report it.. By BEING ABLE to protest in fron of Buckingham Palcae, they are assuring themselves that someone will see it and report it ..

Open your eyes, Wolfie.. He is the most hated man on the planet... and for good reason

37. I saw a snip of "Good Day live" today
where the elderly white male anchor and two scantily clad bimbos were going off about the "Liberal media" making up stories about bush's* concern" over the protests. "He WELCOMES free speech! He's really looking forward to his trip! Why can't the media see that?" they said. I guess they don't read the London papers and know nothing of miniguns, bullet proof glass windows or cancelled addresses to Parliment. In fact, I don't think I've seen any of those things mentioned in any stateside media source! :grr:

You are right, SoCal-we need to write the media on this!

13. The Brits are not a gun happy culture...............
I think there would be a stampede if SS Americans pulled out guns on them. Too many years were spent in labour and union protests and "wars" for the Brits to be complacent or apathetic.

32. Hmm
She came down on her own accord (via a fire service platform) and went quietly away according to Channel 4.

My guess is that they arrested her on "suspicion of criminal damage" but I'll wager that she'll be released without charge in a couple of hours.

33. AWOL's Intelligence Quiz
George W. Bush's Intelligence Quiz

While visiting England, George W. Bush is invited to tea with the Queen. He asks her what her leadership philosophy is. She says that it is to surround herself with intelligent people. He asks how she knows if they're intelligent.

"I do so by asking them the right questions," says the Queen. "Allow me to demonstrate."

She phones Tony Blair and says, "Mr. Prime Minister. Please answer this question: Your mother has a child, and your father has a child, and this child is not your brother or sister. Who is it?"

Tony Blair responds, "It's me, ma'am."

"Correct. Thank you and good-bye, sir," says the Queen. She hangs up and says, "Did you get that, Mr. Bush?"

"Yes ma'am. Thanks a lot. I'll definitely be using that!"

Upon returning to Washington, he decides he'd better put the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to the test. He summons Jesse Helms to the White House and says, "Senator Helms, I wonder if you can answer a question for me."

"Why, of course, sir. What's on your mind?"

"Uh, your mother has a child, and your father has a child, and this child is not your brother or your sister. Who is it?"

Helms hems and haws and finally asks, "Can I think about it and get back to you?" Bush agrees, and Helms leaves. He immediately calls a meeting of other senior senators, and they puzzle over the question for several hours, but nobody can come up with an answer. Finally, in desperation, Helms calls Colin Powell at the State Department and explains his problem.

"Now look here Colin Powell, your mother has a child, and your father has a child, and this child is not your brother, or your sister. Who is it?" Powell answers immediately, "It's me, of course, you dumb ass."

Much relieved, Helms rushes back to the White House and exclaims, "I know the answer, sir! I know who it is! It's Colin Powell!" And Bush replies in disgust, "Wrong, you dumb ass, It's Tony Blair!"

39. Well Done!

She's just been giving interviews to the news networks, and VERY articulate and confident she is, too! She basically wanted to make her own protest in her own way, and highlight the absurdity of 14,000 police trying to secure the centre of London.
