GOP chairman challenges independent efforts to defeat Bush
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2003/11/17/national1452EST0638.DTL

Republican Party Chairman Ed Gillespie on Monday challenged campaign finance watchdog groups to speak out about billionaire George Soros and other independent efforts to defeat President Bush and urged the organizations to disclose how much the moneyed donors have given them.
In an interview with The Associated Press, the GOP chairman also hinted that the Republican National Committee would air ads countering the steady criticism of the president from the Democratic presidential candidates, but he declined to be specific.
"It could be late this year," Gillespie said.
The chairman called on groups such as Common Cause, Democracy 21 and Public Campaign to criticize the unregulated, third-party efforts by Soros, who said he is committed to spending $15 million, and Peter Lewis, who has earmarked $12 million, to defeat Bush. Gillespie sent a letter to the three groups asking them how much Soros has donated to their organizations in his support of campaign finance reform.

It’s always a one-way street with these critters….how dare a moneyed liberal co-op a repug practice.

20. um...check out his positions
He was against the tax cut.
He was against repealing the inheritance tax.
He was against invading Iraq.
He is for Clinton's approach to the M.E.
He wants to fund a study to de-criminalize drugs.
He can't stand Smirk and spending money to defeat him

Not a liberal???????

Hey, if he's not, I don't give a rat's ass. I like his positions and welcome his input. He may be a classical conservative (not a neo-con).

THAT is considered liberal in these naziesque times, and I'll take him as an ally, any day of the week, and twice on Mondays.

6. Hey Ed,
You don't want to limit anyone's FREE SPEECH, do you?

Adapt a tortured reading of the constitution then disown it when you don't like the results. Only the GOP.

8. Is it possible that Ed Gillespie is a HYPOCRITE?
I have been unable to find any criticism by him or the RNC of the ads run by Sam Wyly on Bush's behalf during the 2000 primaries as described in this March 4, 2000 article.

McCain Protests N.Y. Ads

Mystery Bush Supporter Reveals Involvement in One ‘Attack’ Ad

On the receiving end of two tough new attack ads in New York, Sen. John McCain complained that Gov. George W. Bush was “taking the low road” and accused the Texas governor’s surrogates of trying to circumvent campaign law.

. . .

McCain argues that the ad only highlights the need for campaign finance reform, the centerpiece of his campaign.

“Here’s $2 million injected into New York in the last few days of this campaign,” the senator said this morning on NBC’s Today. “Nobody knows where it came from. We’ll probably find out, probably too late. And this is why campaign finance reform is so important — to do away with this soft money.”

Shortly after he made those comments, Texas billionaire Sam Wyly released a statement revealing himself to be the founder of “Republicans for Clean Air.” According to the Houston Chronicle, Wyly and his brother Charles were among the biggest political givers to Bush from 1996-1998, having contributed a total of $673,500.

16. It certainly is funny how
you NEVER hear moon's name utter aloud anymore. I remember doing a report on his cult in the late 70's when he was very much in the news, now that he is a puppetmaster in Washington I guess he is no longer newsworthy.

14. on a Sunday Talk Show
George Will was already whining about "special interest" money entering campaigns... :eyes: ... refered to it as the "Soros Effect"

watch for editorials/articals on this to hit a paper near you...

while wailing, George Will, forgot to mention ISSA bankrolling the CA recall, and that Baghdad-Bush opted out of public funding for the 2000 campaign and that he's opting out again this cycle or that AHH-nuld bankrolled his campaign
