Police retreat to let marchers go down W
From The Times

AT LEAST 100,000 people will march down Whitehall on Thursday to protest against President Bush’s three-day state visit to Britain, police said yesterday. Scotland Yard agreed last night, after hours of negotiation with the Stop the War Coalition, to allow protesters to march along the traditional route close to Parliament. Police believe that more than 100,000 people, including many foreign activists, will take part in the main protest on Thursday. They will walk down Kingsway to Aldwych, over Waterloo Bridge, along the South Bank and then back over Westminster Bridge. From there they will march past Parliament, along Whitehall and will congregate in Trafalgar Square.

Police had wanted marchers to go down Kingsway to Aldwych, along The Strand and into Trafalgar Square. But the protesters said that the route was too short and did not pass any landmarks. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour MP, who took part in the negotiations with the police, said: “We think this is a very successful outcome for all. The march is going to be huge, very well stewarded and very well ordered.” But police fear that the event will be taken over by troublemakers. Activists gathered in East London last night for a training session on what to do if they were arrested on Thursday. Some march organisers are said to have privately passed to police details of those whom they think may try to hijack the protest.

Several European anti-war groups say that they will travel to London for the protests, including Non à la Guerre (No to War), of France, and Ya Basta (Enough’s Enough), of Italy, and the Axis of Peace Coalition of France, Germany and Russia. “We hope and expect there will be at least 300 French men and women on the streets of London next week,” a spokesman for Non à la Guerre said. Up to 300 people are expected to travel from Germany, Rainer Braun, of the Axis of Peace coalition, said. Another French group, Agir Contre la Guerre, is bringing 200 protesters to London by coach tomorrow, at a cost of €40 (£28) a person. Kate Hudson, chairwoman of CND, said: “Hundreds of people from France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands have said they want to come over to London.”

At least 200 Americans are travelling to London for the demonstration, the Stop the War Coalition said. The group also has about 200 coaches transporting people to London from around Britain. Protesters will gather today at the ExxonMobil offices in London and attend an evening rally in North London. Rallies around the capital tomorrow will include a Critical Mass cycle protest, an alternative state procession and a school students rally. Protesters have also threatened to storm Buckingham Palace, where Mr Bush and his wife Laura will be staying. After the main demonstration on Thursday, activists will protest at the US Embassy. On Friday, they will return to the embassy, and there will also be protests in Sedgefield, the Prime Minister’s constituency.

10. Not a good move ...
Edited on Tue Nov-18-03 08:42 AM by Nihil
If any protesters around you suggest storming Buckingham Palace,
get the f*ck away from them ...

Seriously, protests (and protesters) against Bush and Blair will be
tolerated by the police and UK security services - even if you're
bloody-minded enough to try pushing through (or around) their
cordons. However, any action that could be perceived as a genuine
threat to the Queen will get an immediate and uncompromising response.

A few years back some donkey fired a starting pistol at the Queen
when she was in a parade. The "ceremonial" soldier who hauled him
out of the (very angry) crowd admitted that had a bayonet been fitted
to his rifle, he'd have used it. There is a lot of loyalty to the
Queen (even if not to her descendants) and there would be a serious
incident should anyone be stupid enough to try it. The apparent
perpetrators of such a move would be nailed to the ground, with the
full support of most of the public. This would not be a good way
to get people behind the Stop the War movement.

As to who would be trying to provoke such a dumb action ... have you
read about COINTELPRO? Don't assume that the only people on Bush's
team are the men with dark glasses and hearing aids ...

Nihil

14. Be serious, no one's going to suggest storming the Palace.
Except as a joke. We wouldn't try storming the White House, would we?

2. Ahem...
Protesters have also threatened to storm Buckingham Palace, where Mr Bush and his wife Laura will be staying.

If in fact that happens and enough people do it, the police won't be able to stop them, and the Bushes may find themselves checking into the Embassy Suites instead.

8. Might find it difficult to check into the ambassador' residence
Winfield House, because lifelong anti-harassment court bans mean he can't stay in Regents Park as it's within a 10 mile exclusion radius of those UK domiciled democrats that sued him...

9. Brits Await Bush - France, Italy, Germany and Russia solidarity
A woman scaled a gate at Buckingham Palace Monday, unfurling an upside-down American flag in protest, as anti-war activists delivered an 85,000-signature petition asking Prime Minister Tony Blair to call off President Bush's visit to Britain.

Mr. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush leave Tuesday morning for London and will be staying at the palace as the guests of Queen Elizabeth II.

The American flag that waved briefly in front of the palace Monday was upside down, as a symbol of distress, and had lettering reading: "He's not welcome."

but not kill him. I couldn't bear the thought of that piece of garbage becoming a martyr! But with 16000 police protecting the pink tutued coward, I doubt he will even hurt a little pinkie. How could ANYONE think this creature has courage.

Bush could never die with dignity. He would blusters, beg, and plead for his wretched life. It would be disgusting one would almost pity him. He's a coward.

18. Angry mobs are so cute!
Shrub thinks it's really swell that a country has free speech. The sheeple are so amusing in their agony. Set more vivious police upon them and be quick about it!

We know how well the Dauphin listens to "the people" of the UK.

He doesn't even read the newspapers! The whole thing is just an annoying security thing to him. He'll listen to the people's demands over there even less than he listens here.

24. Bush is looking forward to this
Remember he said they are "lucky" to have freedom. He has the ability to ignore this completely, just as he did the 10,000,000 marchers last February (called all those people "focus groups"). It's amazing how easily he is able to insult just about anybody!

An anti-war demonstration will go ahead outside the US embassy this Thursday to coincide with President Bush's visit to London.

The Irish anti-war movement previously intended travelling to London to join mass demonstrations against Bush's visit, but decided to protest at home. (snip/...)
