Australia's new ambassador to the United Nations says talk of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program could be premature. After a meeting in Paris, diplomats from the US, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia remain at odds over what measures to take against Iran.
The US representative Nicholas Burns says he believes that sanctions are in order, although veto-holders Russia and China remain opposed. While the US in particular is pushing the idea of sanctions, Australia's new ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Robert Hill, is taking a cautious approach.
"Discussions of sanctions it seems to me is a little premature," he said. "I would like to see Iran comply with what clearly is the wish of the international community as a whole, without a need for sanctions." "There's certainly apparent differences as to how to go forward, it would seem even within the Security Council.
"But everyone is saying, everyone seems of one mind that it's not in the interests of the international community that Iran not become a nuclear weapons state." The UN Security Council could begin debate tomorrow to discuss the issue.
