U.S. Lawmakers Give Athens Olympics Thumbs Up

ATHENS (Reuters) - Senior U.S. lawmakers have given Athens 2004 Olympics organizers a vote of confidence after months of a media onslaught questioning Greece's readiness to deal with potential security threats during the Games.

In a letter to Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis obtained by Reuters on Tuesday Richard Lugar, chairman of the U.S. Senate's foreign relations committee, and three other senior lawmakers said they were certain Greece would take all necessary measures to protect athletes and visitors.

"We know that your government is committed to taking the critical security precautions an event like the Olympics requires and to seeking any assistance the United States can provide," the letter said.

"We share your hopes for making the 2004 Summer Games a demonstration of Hellenic ingenuity."
