Edit to add link:

WASHINGTON - Rep. Patrick Kennedy (news, bio, voting record) will enter rehab for addiction to prescription pain medication Friday evening after a highly publicized car crash near the Capitol.

Kennedy, D-R.I., plans to seek treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

The congressman was announcing his decision during a new conference Friday afternoon, then planned to travel to Minnesota later in the day.

Kennedy, who has struggled with addiction and depression, said he had checked into the Mayo Clinic over the Christmas holidays and returned to Congress "reinvigorated and healthy."

46. It's completely ridiculous, isn't it?
Sometimes, the things that people say on this board! The probably scenario would work something like this: Bush's minions secretly up Kennedy's dosage of the painkillers to which he is addicted on Thursday night, knowing that Goss will resign today. Ooooga! Ooooga boooga! Then they hypnotize him to drive his car into the wall at precisely the right time, thereby deflecting attention from Hookergate.

It's all a big conspiracy, you know? What, you don't believe it? FREEPER DISRUPTOR!!!!! RW TALKING POINT!!!!!! I suppose you don't believe that the Bush admin is capable of ANY EVIL AT ALL< since you don't seem to believe they hypnotized Pat Kennedy!

Oi. It's like a lunatic asylum in here some days.

27. Chronic depression AND ADDICTION.
Edited on Fri May-05-06 02:33 PM by Orsino
As much as I applaud his openly seeking help, I was irked by his patting himself on the back as "open and honest" without bothering to mention what substance(s) he's addicted to.

If alcohol is among them, that's nearly an admission that he was driving drunk last night, and it makes his having avoided a sobriety test that much more suspicious.

RHIP.

on edit: seems I missed the part of the story where he alludes to prescription pain medication. That's pretty open.

41. I beg to differ...
If the proudest day for our party is when one of our representatives announces he's getting treatment for addiction, we've got a pretty pathetic party indeed.

Not to pillory Rep. Kennedy, but neither should we praise him to the skies for realizing he has a medical problem and dealing with it. That's a more sensible approach than lots of celebrities display, but not exactly a high point for our party, compared to, say, the New Deal, the creation of Social Security and Medicare, or the Civil Rights Acts.

22. more here:

...The congressman said he became concerned about his condition after the Thursday morning car accident.

"I simply do not remember getting out of bed, being pulled over by the police, or being cited for three driving infractions," Kennedy said. "That's not how I want to live my life. And that's not how I want to represent the people of Rhode Island."

The congressman's father, Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., issued a supportive statement in which he said he's proud of his son for admitting his problem and taking steps to correct it.

"He has taken full responsibility for events that occurred ... and he will continue to cooperate fully with any investigation," the elder Kennedy said.

The younger Kennedy said he hoped that his "openness today and in the past, and my acknowledgment that I need help, will give others the courage to get help if they need it."

..He announced his decision to reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference. He walked in alone, gripped the lectern, cleared his throat and began haltingly.

"Of course, in every recovery, each day has its ups and downs, but I have been strong, focused and productive since my return," Kennedy said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press.

28. Text of Patrick Kennedy's Statement
The statement Friday by Rep. Patrick Kennedy:

Over my 15 years in public life, I've felt a responsibility to speak honestly and openly about my challenges with addiction and depression. I've been fighting this chronic disease since I was a young man, and have aggressively and periodically sought treatment so that I can live a full and productive life.

I struggle every day with this disease, as do millions of Americans. I've dedicated my public service to raising awareness about the chronic disease of addiction and have fought to increase access to care and recovery supports for the too many Americans forced to struggle on their own.

This past Christmas, I realized that I had to seek help again so checked myself into the Mayo Clinic for addiction to prescription pain medication. I was there over the holiday and during the House recess getting well, and I returned to the House of Representatives and to Rhode Island reinvigorated and healthy.

Of course, in every recovery, each day has its ups and downs, but I have been strong, focused and productive since my return. But in all candor, the incident on Wednesday evening concerns me greatly.

I simply do not remember getting out of bed, being pulled over by the police, or being cited for three driving infractions. That's not how I want to live my life, and that's not how I want to represent the people of Rhode Island.

It's another case of Ambien sleep driving. We need to get this drug off of the market.

""I simply do not remember getting out of bed, being pulled over by the police or being cited for three driving infractions," Kennedy said at a Washington news conference broadcast live on cable television." . . . .

Kennedy said he was disoriented from taking prescription drugs -- Phenergan to treat gastroenteritis and Ambien, a sleep medication -- and that he was rushing to the Capitol under the misapprehension that he was late for a vote."

for admitting the problem and seeking help is the first step
to getting honest with oneself. PK's mother,Joan, has had her
problems with addictions over the years. I'm sure that his
family will support him in his recovery efforts whole
heartedly. Hopefully his fellow Rhode Islanders will too.
All the best to you Patrick as you take one day at a time.
