Schumer pushes for action on ethanol
May 8, 2006

Sen. Charles Schumer pushed for the United States Sunday to suspend a tariff on foreign ethanol that could reduce gasoline prices by about eight cents a gallon.

Schumer (D-N.Y.), said limited domestic ethanol production, coupled with a 54-cent tariff on every gallon of gasoline containing foreign ethanol, drives up prices to American drivers.

"The bottom line is simple," Schumer said. "We have to do everything we can do to get the price of gasoline down."

Standing in front of a Hess gas station on 10th Avenue in Manhattan, Schumer said domestic production of ethanol is not high enough to meet demand and suspending the tariff would help lower prices.

Schumer said large corporations that produce ethanol, which is derived from corn, barley, wheat and other products, are behind the high tariff on foreign ethanol.

5. Ethanol makes up only a small fraction of the "gas" you pump.
Ergo, the cut in tariff only affects that portion of your
"gas" that could be foreign ethanol.
