More than 100 groups send letter criticizing environmental record of interior secretary nomineeThe Idaho Statesman | Edition Date: 05-10-2006
More than a hundred environmental groups, including two in Idaho, said Tuesday that they oppose Gov. Dirk Kempthorne's nomination as interior secretary.
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is scheduled to vote on Kempthorne's nomination at 9:30 a.m. MDT today. Kempthorne has strong bipartisan support and is expected to get the committee's support.
But the environmental groups — mostly local and regional groups across the country — told senators Kempthorne has had a poor record on endangered species and wildlife conservation, first as a senator and later as governor.
"The nomination of Gov. Kempthorne as secretary of interior indicates this administration's strong intention to continue the disastrous policies implemented under Secretary of Interior (Gale) Norton," the groups said in a letter.
