MIAMI -- Amid heavy street policing, blocked iron walls and federal marshals in riot gear, an estimated 1,000 marchers reached downtown Tuesday just as the skyline began to light up.
The Root Cause People's March arrived near the site of the Inter-Continental Hotel, where leaders from 34 countries in the Western Hemisphere will gather for a summit to hatch out a plan and create the Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement.
The protest in downtown Miami was marked by spirited chants of "FTAA, no way" and remained peaceful throughout the night, something authorities appreciated. No arrests were made.
"There's been no violence," said Lt. Bill Schwartz, a Miami police spokesman. "This couldn't be going better. They're passionate but peaceful. It's a very cordial relationship we have. These people are having a party and we enjoy it." (snip/...)
