Bush warned over doping stance
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics_2004/3282301.stm

World Anti-Doping Agency boss Dick Pound has accused the US administration of showing no interest in the fight against drugs in sport.

And the WADA president said the lack of support from George Bush's government could lead to sanctions against the US team at next summer's Athens Olympics.

He also warned that it could threaten New York's bid for the 2012 Games.

"Our sense is they're not the slightest bit interested in this issue," said Pound. "There's just a complete vacuum and void there as far as we're concerned." Pound said the United States, Italy and Ukraine were among the countries yet to pay their annual dues to WADA, which is jointly funded by the Olympic movement and national governments.

5. You want New York to lose an Olympic bid over this?
Imagine the humiliation for that alone.

7. How could we be more humiliated than being taken over by the Bunnypants
Gang, thus exposing the weakness of Amerika in being taken over by the first dictator that really tried and gave a good push on the hollow, rotted tree...

8. London is bidding for that too
But quite frankly you can have the Olympics. I don't think they are great for most cities and I know for a fact that a lot of people in East London are unhappy that an Olympic bid is being considered there instead of something more important such as policing, education & healthcare.

Plus I can remember the disasterous white elephant that was the 1991 World Student Games in my home town of Sheffield (an idea of that well known piece of "new" labour vermin, David Blunkett) I think that Sheffield is still paying off the debts from that flop to this day! :grr:

That said, even if the Olymipcs are not worth the bother there is still something to lose here.

the lack of support from George Bush's government could lead to sanctions against the US team at next summer's Athens Olympics.

6. It's important to take Bush* to task on all the issues that apply.

It would be a mistake if all attention was focused on, say, the top three issues, as defined by someone. There are many issues deserving of attention.

10. bad news for purist sports fans
The genie is out of the bottle. The toothpaste is out of the tube. You might as well try to drive backwards to un-wear your tires.

Performance-enhancing drugs are here, and they are not going away. The IOC, NFL, NBA, etc, etc, etc, will have as much success getting rid of them as law enforcement has had in getting rid of pot.

Dare I use the phrase "get over it"? :)
