Discovery prompts more concern about Iran nukes

VIENNA, Austria - A discovery by U.N. nuclear watchdogs is fueling new concerns that Iran may be hiding weapons-making activities.

Diplomats say the U.N. atomic agency has found traces of highly enriched uranium at an Iranian site tied to Tehran's defense ministry.

And the agency believes the uranium is dense enough to be close to or beyond weapons-grade.

3. Yeah well I heard that Iran was crossing grizzly bears and polar bears
in their underground weapons laboratories; and that was from an impeccable Regnery published author, with TWO mail order degrees, who was being interviewed on FOX News.

Go ahead and try to shrug that one off, you liberal Smartypants!

...Iran's home grown enrichment program. They've only just achieved a very modest enrichment of a very small quantity of uranium.

8. This is old news (2005) and has been resolved
The IAEA did find *very small amounts* of HEU in some of the centrifuges Iran procured from Pakistan.

They determined, however, to everyone's satisfaction, that the HEU was of Pakistani - not I-ranian - origin.

File this story under Neocon Propaganda...

and are actually planting some of the "evidence" before invading.

Of course, exposing a covert American intelligence operation that was tracking this stuff in the middle East, essentially shutting down any monitoring of this kind of thing, also helped.

36. So frigging what?
If they want nukes to protect their country, why shouldn't they have it? I would prefer all countries, including the US, get rid of them all. But that's not going to happen. So who are we to tell anyone else they can't have nukes if we have them? How will Iran defend themselves if Israel were to attack them with their nukes?

37. Do they actually say an amount? no.
if Iran was actually making this stuff, they had to have started sometime after their revolution. Because with the few and I mean few (180) centrifuges they have it would take them years, minimum 13, to make weapons great nuclear material.

Also if they had a secret plant making this stuff with thousands of centrifuges, the heat signature would be seen from space, because it would require an enormous amount of power to run such a facility.

More than likely, I bet they got whatever small amount they possess, (if any of this is actually true) from N. Korea or some sort of black market op.

No way in hell do I or will I ever believe that they have manufactured 90% pure weapons grade material.

39. AP and New York Times: U.N. Finds New Uranium Traces in Iran
Edited on Sat May-13-06 12:54 AM by originalpckelly
This time it isn't a joke, but I would be highly suspicious of this news. :-(

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/13/world/middleeast/13iran.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Atomic inspectors have found traces of highly enriched uranium on equipment linked to an Iranian military base, raising new questions about whether Iran harbors a clandestine program to make nuclear bombs, diplomats said yesterday.

It is the second such discovery in three years of United Nations inspections in Iran. As the Security Council debates how to handle the atomic impasse with Tehran, the finding is likely to deepen skepticism about Iran's claims that its program is entirely peaceful.

Also report in the USA Today for those who don't want to register with the NYT:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-05-12-iranianuranium_x.htm?POE=NEWISVA
VIENNA (AP) — The U.N. atomic agency found traces of highly enriched uranium at an Iranian site linked to the country's defense ministry, diplomats said Friday, adding to concerns that Tehran was hiding activities aimed at making nuclear arms.

The diplomats, who demanded anonymity in exchange for revealing the confidential information, said the findings were preliminary and still had to be confirmed through other lab tests. But they said the density of enrichment appeared to be close to or above the level used to make nuclear warheads.

Still, they said, further analysis could show that the traces match others established to have come from abroad. The International Atomic Energy Agency determined earlier traces of weapons-grade uranium were imported on equipment from Pakistan that Iran bought on the black market during nearly two decades of clandestine activity discovered just over three years ago.

Uranium enriched to between 3.5% and 5% is used to make fuel for reactors to generate electricity. It becomes suitable for use in nuclear weapons when enriched to more than 90%.
