Collins, Snowe would join move to kill energy bill

WASHINGTON — Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins said Tuesday that they would support a potential filibuster to kill a pending energy bill, even as the measure passed the House.

The Maine lawmakers are among a handful of Republicans bucking their congressional leaders and President Bush on one of his top domestic priorities.

"The more I delve into this bill, the worse I realize it is," Collins said. "I think it's bad for our environment, it's bad for public health and it's bad energy policy."

Snowe also said she would vote against limiting debate, thus allowing the filibuster that could kill the legislation as Congress seeks to adjourn before Thanksgiving.

9. Senator Durbin (Illinois) Now Opposed

The Energy Bill has some provisions that would help Illinois -- including sops to the Illinois (high sulphur) coal industry -- but Durbin is now opposed to the bill, primarily because it eliminates legal liability for MTBE manufacturers.

MTBE is (or was) a gasoline additive. It does a nice job helping to cut down on emissions. Only problem is that it pollutes groundwater everywhere it gets loose, so it's really nasty stuff. It's going off the market. Illinois farmers (and other farmers) produce the MTBE alternatives. Cynical folks might say that Durbin opposes the Energy Bill because it would discourage fuel R&D into alternatives to those produced by Illinois farmers. But I'll take Durbin's opposition for whatever reason. We're far better off without any bill.

It's not mentioned in the article, but as a former New Englander, it always seemed that some of the New England (especially NH and ME) conservatives would take serious issue with the blind eye being turned to emissions from coal burning in the Ohio Valley area. Is this being mentioned as one of the contributing concerns?

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Mike Castle voted Tuesday to buck his own Republican leaders and oppose a $50 billion energy bill that he charged would hurt the environment and give taxpayer subsidies to big oil and gas companies.

The rebel Republican from Delaware also objected to provisions that would weaken safe drinking water laws and give the federal government more control over whether to allow oil and gas drilling off the state's coast.

The congressman sided with environmentalists, who decried the bill for giving more than $23 billion in tax breaks to "polluters" and weakening clean air and water laws. Supporters said the bill would help boost America's energy supply and decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

"I support a strong national energy policy, but believe it must promote conservation, alternative fuels and technologies in conjunction with maintaining sound environmental practices," Castle said. "I do not believe this energy bill meets the goals, and instead passes supply and environmental problems and more debt to the generations which will follow us."
