EarthLink announces job cuts

excerpt:

The downsizing is the latest in a series of cuts EarthLink has made this year, both in Pasadena and across the country, as it continues to recover from the Internet bubble that burst some two and a half years ago.

In August, EarthLink laid off 100 Pasadena workers and began subleasing about 90,000 square feet of space in its building at 3100 New York Drive to Fidelity National Tax Services. That followed a reduction of 485 jobs and the closure of its New York Drive site this spring.

BHS plans layoffs

PITTSFIELD -- Berkshire Health Systems, the parent company of two hospitals and the county's largest employer, announced yesterday that it will lay off 44 employees, clear evidence that the financial pressures of the medical marketplace and increased competition in Pittsfield are taking a toll.

The nonprofit company, which runs both Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, said it expects to post its first operating loss in 11 years, with an expected shortfall of more than $2.8 million for the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30. That loss is equivalent to 1.4 percent of Berkshire Health Systems' roughly $200 million annual budget.

In an effort to cut costs and balance its books, BHS said yesterday that it was laying off 44 people by eliminating the equivalent of 29 full-time jobs. The cuts include administrative, clerical and information systems positions.

3. AT&T Wireless Deteriorating
AT&T Wireless is in the midst of a transition from one digital wireless technology to another. It's a very trying time as a subscriber. So trying, that I switched to another carrier.

And I'm not alone. AT&T Wireless is bleeding subscribers with more to follow this November when number portability goes into effect. This layoff is likely in anticipation of that bloodletting.

I sincerely hope AT&T Wireless gets its act together. Their Digital One Rate program was inspired. (AT&T Wireless essentially invented the worry-free national rate plan.) But it has been all downhill ever since.

5. Depends on Where You Live, Of Course
For the best service nationally (on average) it'd got to be Verizon Wireless. (That's the carrier I switched to.) Their capacity is good, they've continued to invest in their network, and they're largely based on the tried and true 800 MHz frequencies. You can still get analog-capable digital phones with them. Private message me if you need further details on the best deals with Verizon. (No, I don't get a commission.)

For the cheapest but still decent network I'd probably look at T-Mobile. Some people at least like them.

If you live in a U.S. Cellular market, and you don't need a national plan -- theirs are expensive -- then I'd check them out.

I'm not a big fan of Cingular, Sprint, or AT&T Wireless. Just my humble opinion.
