The nonprofit company, which runs both Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, said it expects to post its first operating loss in 11 years, with an expected shortfall of more than $2.8 million for the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30. That loss is equivalent to 1.4 percent of Berkshire Health Systems' roughly $200 million annual budget.
In an effort to cut costs and balance its books, BHS said yesterday that it was laying off 44 people by eliminating the equivalent of 29 full-time jobs. The cuts include administrative, clerical and information systems positions.
