Rep. Cleaver wants congressional fuel efficiency

Cleaver wants congressional fuel efficiency
By STEVE KRASKE
The Kansas City Star

U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver wants to end a perk used by his colleagues: the spending of taxpayer dollars to lease gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles to travel their districts.

On Thursday, the Missouri Democrat introduced a rules change that would require members of Congress to lease energy-efficient vehicles.

The legislation would bar lawmakers from using their official office funds to lease vehicles that don’t use alternative fuels. The leasing practice is a little-known and legal House perk. The Senate doesn’t allow its members to lease vehicles.

. . .

"Surely Congress cannot sell the American public on the need to abandon its gas guzzlers when they observe members of Congress proudly driving them," Cleaver said.
