(Native) Hawaiian recognition to come to a Senate vote
Sen. Daniel Akaka says the Senate will finally vote on the Hawaiian recognition bill during the beginning of June.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will force the Akaka bill to come to the Senate floor in the first week of June, and a vote on it would come shortly after debate ended.

Akaka has been trying to get the bill to come to a vote since 1999.

The proposal would give Native Hawaiians rights to self-governance, similar to what is already granted to American Indians and Native Alaskans.

Akaka says the bill is important because it gives the native people of Hawaii a chance to right some of the wrongs done when the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893.

2. I can't understand what the difference would be
with Hawaiian sovereignty and Athabaskan or Inupiat. Doesn't make any sense. They are NATIVES, you boobs!

Best of luck to Hawaii from Northern Honolulu (you do realize about half of Hawaii is populated by Alaskans in January and February.... we call it LA then, Lower Alaska)! :pals:

4. This has always been a hard battle for
them because recognition would entitle them to benefits available through the government now available to Native Americans through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This is a government agency with which Native Americans basically have a love/hate relationship with. It would also permit the pursuit of restitution for past wrongs. It all comes down to money, just like everything else.
